The Mahalsa Narayani Temple at Mardol, in Goa's Ponda taluka, is dedicated to Mahalsa, worshipped here as a form of Mohini, the female avatar of Vishnu. The image shows her with four arms holding a trident, a sword, a severed head and a drinking bowl, standing on a fallen figure, and wearing the sacred thread usually given only to male deities. The shrine's origins lie further south in Salcete; when temples there were pulled down during the Portuguese period in the sixteenth century, devotees carried the deity north into Ponda and re-established her at Mardol. Its best-known features are the tall multi-tiered brass deepstambha in the courtyard, lit with rows of oil lamps, and a large brass bell historically used for swearing oaths. Many Goud Saraswat Brahmin and Vaishnava families across Goa and coastal Karnataka regard Mahalsa as their kuladevata and return here for that reason.
October to March is the comfortable season in Goa, dry and mild in the mornings, which suits elders best. Navaratri, usually in September or October, and the Magha Jatra in February are the two biggest occasions and draw very large crowds, so choose them for the atmosphere rather than for a quiet darshan. The June-to-September monsoon is green and uncrowded but wet underfoot.
The temple stands at Mardol on the Panaji-Ponda road, about 1 km from the Mangeshi temple, roughly 22 km from Panaji and about 5 km from Ponda town. Dabolim (Goa International Airport) is around 35 km by road; the newer Manohar International Airport at Mopa in north Goa is much further, roughly 60 km. Madgaon (Margao) railway station is about 26 km away, while Karmali station near Old Goa is the closer railhead. Buses on the Panaji-Ponda route pass nearby, and taxis or autos from Ponda reach the temple gate directly.
The temple restricts entry for foreign visitors, a rule its management introduced citing dress and conduct. Modest traditional clothing is expected; shorts and sleeveless wear are not appropriate, and footwear is left outside. Puja and darshan schedules shift around festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is there a climb or a lot of steps for elderly pilgrims?
No. The temple is on level ground in Mardol village with only a short flight of steps at the entrance, and vehicles can be brought close, so it is comfortable for elders.
Can Mahalsa be combined with the other Ponda temples in one day?
Yes. Mardol sits in the Ponda temple belt, with Mangeshi about a kilometre away and Shanta Durga at Kavlem and Nagesh at Bandora a short drive on, so a half-day circuit of three or four temples is common. Check each temple's darshan hours yourself before setting out; the temple boards run their own queues and no agent can arrange faster entry.
