Sé Cathedral in Old Goa is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria — Alfonso de Albuquerque took Goa on her feast day in 1510, and the church carries her name for it. Built under Portuguese rule between 1562 and 1619 and consecrated in 1640, it is one of the largest churches in Asia, with a Tuscan exterior, a Corinthian interior and a gilded main altar whose carved panels tell the story of St Catherine's life. Its most distinctive feature is what is missing: of the two original bell towers, one collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt, so the facade stands lopsided with a single tower holding the Golden Bell, cast in 1652 and the largest in Goa. Pilgrims come for the Chapel of the Cross of Miracles, for the baptismal font tradition holds was used by St Francis Xavier, and because the cathedral stands within the Churches and Convents of Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
November to February is the comfortable window — dry, mild and pleasant for walking the Old Goa church complex on foot. The Feast of St Catherine falls on 25 November, and 3 December brings the Feast of St Francis Xavier at the neighbouring Basilica of Bom Jesus, which draws very large crowds to the whole of Old Goa; roads and parking fill from early morning and elders may find that week hard going. June to September is the heavy monsoon, green and quiet but wet.
The nearest airport is Goa International Airport at Dabolim, roughly 26 km away, about 45 minutes by taxi; Manohar International Airport at Mopa is the other option, considerably further north. The closest railhead is Karmali, about 3 km away — a ten-minute drive or auto ride. By road, Old Goa is around 10-12 km east of Panaji on NH-748, with regular buses and taxis; Sé Cathedral, the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the other heritage churches are within walking distance of each other.
This is an active cathedral, not only a monument. Modest dress is expected — shoulders and knees covered, no shorts or beachwear, which matters if you are coming straight from the coast. Mass and service times change, so confirm with the cathedral office before you plan a visit around a service. Photography rules can be restricted inside and during services; follow the notices and the staff on the day.

Can non-Christians enter Sé Cathedral?
Yes. Visitors of all faiths are welcome inside, as at the other Old Goa churches. You are only asked to dress modestly, keep quiet, and not disturb any service in progress.
Is Sé Cathedral the same as the Basilica of Bom Jesus where St Francis Xavier's body is kept?
No, they are two different churches standing close to each other in Old Goa, a short walk apart. The relics of St Francis Xavier are in the Basilica of Bom Jesus; Sé Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop and is dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria. Most visitors see both in the same trip.
Is it manageable for elderly parents?
Largely yes. There is no climb or long flight of steps to the cathedral, the ground is flat, and the main churches of Old Goa are near one another. The walking between churches in open sun is the main strain, so carry water and go in the morning. Ringing the Golden Bell is not a visitor activity, and tower access is not part of a normal visit.
