Nagueshi Temple

Nagueshi, also written Nagesh or Nageshi, is a Shiva temple in Bandora village near Ponda, where the god is worshipped as Shri Nagesh Maharudra in the form of a Shivalinga that tradition holds is swayambhu — self-manifested, found by a cowherd whose cow poured milk over the spot in a grove of Shami trees. A stone inscription of 1413 AD in the temple records a grant of land for the deities Nagesh and Mahalaxmi during the reign of the Vijayanagara king Veer Pratap Devaraya, and sculptures of Uma-Maheshwara and Ganesha in the compound have been dated by archaeologists to around the 7th and 8th centuries, so worship here is older than the standing building. Unlike most Goan shrines, which were physically moved out of the Portuguese-held Old Conquests, Nagueshi still stands on its original site, because Ponda taluka lay outside Portuguese control at the time. Nagesh is the kuladevata — family deity — of several Gaud Saraswat Brahmin families, which is why many visitors come as a lineage obligation rather than as tourists; its best-known physical feature is the walled temple tank, from a particular spot on whose edge the reflection of the sanctum lamps can be seen in the water.
