Sanchi is a Buddhist hilltop complex in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, built up over roughly a thousand years and inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1989. Its centrepiece is the Great Stupa (Stupa No. 1), a solid hemispherical dome about 36.6 m across and 16.5 m high, begun in brick under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE to enshrine relics of the Buddha, later doubled in size and encased in stone by the Shungas. What people come to see are the four carved gateways, the toranas, added in the Satavahana period and covered with scenes from the Buddha's life and the Jataka stories, told entirely through symbols rather than a human figure of the Buddha. Nearby stands Ashoka's polished sandstone pillar, and Stupa No. 3, which held the relics of Sariputta and Mahamoggallana, the Buddha's two chief disciples; portions of those relics were enshrined in 1952 at the Chetiyagiri Vihara built below by the Maha Bodhi Society.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Madhya Pradesh is dry and pleasant and the open hilltop is walkable through the day; April to June is very hot with almost no shade on the site. The one occasion that draws crowds is the Chetiyagiri Vihara festival at the end of November, when the relics of Sariputta and Mahamoggallana are brought out for public viewing and pilgrims arrive from across India and abroad — expect long queues and full hotels in Sanchi and Bhopal that weekend, so book well ahead. The winter Sanchi Mahotsav organised by the district is another draw; confirm the year's dates locally before planning around it.
The usual airport is Raja Bhoj Airport at Bhopal, roughly 55 km away, with taxis taking about an hour and a half. Sanchi has its own small railway station about 1.5 km from the monument, but only a few trains halt there — most travellers take a train to Vidisha, about 10 km away, or to the far better connected Bhopal Junction, about 46 km, and continue by taxi or bus. By road, Sanchi is an easy 46 km drive north-east of Bhopal and about 23 km from Raisen town on good highway, so it is commonly done as a day trip from Bhopal.
This is an Archaeological Survey of India protected monument rather than a working temple with priests or darshan, and it sits on top of a hill, so the approach involves a climb and a fair amount of walking on open, largely unshaded ground — elders should carry water, a hat and comfortable shoes, and allow extra time. Entry is ticketed at the gate by the ASI. The separate Chetiyagiri Vihara, where the disciples' relics are kept, is a functioning Buddhist temple below the hill and follows its own schedule; confirm before you travel.

Is Sanchi Stupa open to people of all religions?
Yes. Sanchi is a protected archaeological site and there is no restriction on entry by faith. Visitors of every religion and nationality are welcome, and the same is true of the Chetiyagiri Vihara below the hill.
Can I actually see the relics of Sariputta and Mahamoggallana?
The relics are kept enshrined at the Chetiyagiri Vihara and are brought out for public viewing during the annual festival at the end of November. Outside that occasion you can visit the vihara but should not expect the relics to be on display. Confirm the year's dates with the vihara before planning a trip around it.
Can Sanchi be done as a day trip from Bhopal, and what else is close by?
Yes — it is about 46 km from Bhopal and most visitors go and return the same day, allowing two to three hours on the hill. Udayagiri caves and Vidisha lie close by and are often combined into the same day's drive. Simple accommodation is also available in Sanchi itself if you want an unhurried morning.
