The Sree Rajarajeshwara Temple at Taliparamba, about 23 km north of Kannur town, is one of the 108 ancient Shiva temples of Kerala and among the most important Shiva shrines in the Malabar region. The deity is Shiva as Rajarajeshwara, worshipped as a jyotirlinga-swarupa of great antiquity; tradition holds that the linga was installed by the sage Maandhata at a spot with no cremation ground nearby. The temple was patronised and rebuilt by the Mooshika and later Kolathiri rulers, and it is unusual among Kerala temples in having no kodimaram (flagstaff), a squat quadrangular sanctum under a two-tiered copper-clad pyramidal roof set within heavy laterite boundary walls. It is also the temple to which other South Indian temples traditionally bring their unresolved questions: a prasnam, the astrological consultation, is held on a raised peedha outside the shrine, and the answer given here is accepted as final.
October to February, when Malabar is dry and comparatively cool, is the easiest stretch for elders; June to September brings very heavy monsoon rain to this coast. There is no annual utsavam or procession here — the deity is never taken outside the temple — so there is no single festival week that draws a crush of pilgrims, and ordinary days stay manageable. Mahashivaratri sees the largest gathering of the year; confirm the observance dates with the temple before you fix travel.
The nearest airport is Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, roughly 35-40 km away by road, about an hour's drive. Kannur railway station, about 23 km south, is the practical railhead and is on the Mangaluru-Shoranur main line with good connections from Bengaluru, Chennai, Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram; smaller halts such as Kannapuram and Payangadi lie closer but take few express trains. By road the temple is on NH 66 at Taliparamba town, roughly 2 km from the Taliparamba bus stand, with frequent KSRTC and private buses from Kannur and Payyanur.
Three things to settle before you book. Only Hindus are permitted inside the temple. The dress code is strictly enforced: men must wear a mundu or dhoti and remove their shirt and vest before entering, and women must be in saree or salwar-kameez, with no western wear; bags are not allowed in. Most importantly, women devotees are admitted only during a short window at the end of the evening worship, not during the day at all — so a family group cannot all take darshan together at a morning visit. The exact hour of that window is reported differently by different sources; confirm it with the temple before you travel.

Can women visit the Rajarajeshwara Temple at Taliparamba?
Yes, but only during a short window late in the evening, at the close of the day's worship. Women are not admitted during the morning or general evening darshan. The custom is old and the local belief is that Shiva is present with Parvati at that hour. Because the exact time is reported differently across sources and can change, call the temple and confirm before planning an evening arrival, especially if elders are travelling with you.
Are non-Hindus allowed inside?
No. Entry is restricted to Hindus, as at several traditional Kerala temples. Non-Hindu members of a group can see the outer compound and the town but cannot enter the temple itself. Plan the itinerary with that in mind rather than arriving and being turned away at the gate.
What is the prasnam that this temple is known for?
When another temple in South India faces an unresolved ritual or administrative question, it is traditionally brought here for a prasnam, an astrological consultation conducted by trained astrologers on a raised platform outside the shrine. It is a temple procedure, not a service a visitor can book on arrival; anything of that kind is arranged directly with the temple authorities.
Is there a climb or many steps?
No. The temple stands on level ground in Taliparamba town, with only a short walk from the road and a few steps at the entrance, so it is comfortable for elderly pilgrims. The dress code, not the terrain, is the main thing to prepare for.
