Pattadakal is a group of ten 7th- and 8th-century temples on the west bank of the Malaprabha river in Bagalkot district, built under the Chalukya kings of Badami and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Nine of the temples are Shaiva, with a 9th-century Jain temple from the Rashtrakuta period standing a little apart. The name comes from the site's role as the place where Chalukya kings were consecrated — "the stone of coronation" — and its most distinctive quality is architectural: four temples follow the northern Nagara form, four the southern Dravida form, and the Papanatha temple combines both on one plan, which is why the site is studied as the meeting point of the two great Indian temple traditions. The largest, the Virupaksha temple of about 740–745 CE, is still an active place of Shiva worship and is widely held to have been the model followed at the Kailasa temple of Ellora.
October to February is the comfortable window; north Karnataka summers from March to May are severely hot and the temple courtyards are open stone with very little shade. Karnataka Tourism holds the Pattadakal Dance Festival here in January–February, when classical dancers perform against the temples — pleasant weather, but the busiest days of the year on site. Monsoon months bring greener surroundings and thinner crowds, though the open walking can be awkward in rain.
The nearest airport is Hubballi (Hubli), roughly 140 km away by road; Belagavi airport is another option at roughly 180 km. The nearest railhead is Badami station on the Hubballi–Solapur line, about 17 km away, with taxis and local buses to the site. By road Pattadakal is about 20–22 km from Badami and around 10 km from Aihole, so most families cover Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal together in one or two days by hired car from Badami or Bagalkot.
This is an Archaeological Survey of India protected monument complex, not a working temple town. Only the Virupaksha temple has continuing worship; the other structures are conserved monuments where you walk and view rather than take darshan, so do not plan an abhisheka or elaborate puja here without confirming with the temple in advance. The ground is open, uneven stone with almost no shade — carry water, hats and footwear that is easy to remove, and allow extra time if elders are walking. Confirm entry arrangements and any festival-day restrictions with the site before you travel.

Is Pattadakal a living temple where we can do darshan and puja?
Partly. The Virupaksha temple remains an active Shiva shrine with regular worship. The rest of the group is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India as a heritage monument, so they are open for viewing rather than for rituals. If a specific puja matters to your family, confirm directly with the temple before you plan around it.
Can we cover Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal in one trip?
Yes, and most visitors do. The three are within about 25 km of each other around Badami, which makes a sensible base with the best hotels of the region. Two full days is comfortable for elders; one long day is possible by car but rushed, since Badami's cave temples involve a climb of steps that Pattadakal does not.
How much walking is involved, and is it manageable for elderly parents?
The temples stand together on one level enclosure, so there is no hill climb or long flight of steps — the main effort is walking on uneven stone across an open, sun-exposed compound. Going early in the morning or in the late afternoon, and visiting between October and February, makes it far easier for older visitors.
