The Ram Raja Temple at Orchha is the shrine where Rama is worshipped not only as a deity but as the reigning king of Orchha, and it is the only well-known temple in India where that royal protocol is followed — armed guards of the state police present a guard of honour and gun salute to the deity, as they would to a ruling monarch. It stands in what was originally the Rani Mahal, the palace of Queen Ganesh Kunwari (also called Kamla Devi), wife of the Bundela ruler Madhukar Shah (r. 1554–1592). Tradition holds that the queen brought the image from Ayodhya on the condition that wherever it was first set down would become its permanent seat; she placed it in her own chambers, it could not be moved again, and the grand Chaturbhuj Temple built nearby to receive it was left without its intended murti. The image is worshipped in a child form of Rama, seated in padmasana with a sword and shield, and the building itself is a palace rather than a conventional temple — flat-roofed, domed and turreted in a Bundela-Mughal idiom, painted in pale pink, yellow and white, with the empty Chaturbhuj Temple towering directly behind it.
October to March is the comfortable window — Orchha and the Bundelkhand plain are pleasant and dry then, while April to June is severely hot and July to September brings the monsoon. Ram Navami (March–April) and Vivah Panchami, the marriage festival of Rama and Sita (November–December), are the two big draws; both fill the temple courtyard and the small town completely, so elders who dislike crush should pick an ordinary weekday instead. Makar Sankranti, Vasant Panchami and Diwali are also observed here.
The usual approach is by train: Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi Junction (the former Jhansi Junction), on the Delhi–Bhopal main line, is about 16–18 km away, with autos and taxis running to Orchha in roughly half an hour. The nearest airports are Gwalior (about 113 km) and Khajuraho (about 155 km). By road Orchha is easily reached from Jhansi, Gwalior and Khajuraho by taxi or bus; the temple sits in the centre of the old town, and vehicles stop a short walk from the entrance.
Cameras and mobile phones are not permitted inside the temple — photography of the deity is prohibited, and phones are usually deposited at counters outside, so carry as little as possible. Footwear is left outside as at any temple, and the courtyard stone gets hot in summer afternoons. Access is largely at ground level with only a modest flight of steps, which suits older pilgrims. Aarti and darshan hours vary by season and on festival days; confirm with the temple before you travel.

Why is Rama worshipped as a king here, with a police salute?
Because at Orchha he is regarded as the actual ruler of the state, not merely its presiding deity. Tradition holds that when Queen Ganesh Kunwari asked to bring the image from Ayodhya, one of the conditions was that Rama would be king of Orchha and would not be subordinate to her husband. The Bundela rulers accepted this, and the practice continues today as a formal guard of honour and armed salute by state police at the temple.
Why is the huge Chaturbhuj Temple next door empty?
Chaturbhuj was built to house the image that the queen brought from Ayodhya. By tradition, the condition attached to the image was that it would stay wherever it was first placed. The queen kept it in her palace chambers while Chaturbhuj was being finished, and it could not afterwards be moved — so the palace became the Ram Raja Temple and Chaturbhuj remained without its intended deity. It is still open and worth walking up into for the view over Orchha.
How much time should we keep for Orchha, and is it manageable for elderly parents?
A full day is comfortable. Ram Raja Temple itself is quick and mostly step-free, and the Chaturbhuj Temple, Orchha Fort complex with Jahangir Mahal and Raja Mahal, Lakshmi Narayan Temple and the chhatris (cenotaphs) on the Betwa river are all within a few kilometres. Chaturbhuj and the fort involve steep stairs, so plan those separately from the Ram Raja darshan if mobility is a concern. Many families visit Orchha as a day trip or overnight halt from Jhansi or on the Gwalior–Khajuraho route.
