Oachira Parabrahma Temple, on the Kollam–Alappuzha border in Kerala, is dedicated to Parabrahma — the formless universal consciousness, understood in local tradition as Shiva without form. It is unusual among Kerala temples in having no sanctum sanctorum and no idol: devotees worship in the open, under old trees spread across a compound of about 36 acres beside National Highway 66. The absence of a walled shrine is the site's defining feature, and it is popularly called Dakshina Kashi. Its grounds also hold the Padanilam, the waterlogged field where the temple's best-known ritual is staged.
November to February is the easiest stretch for families and elders — dry, cooler weather, and the twelve-day Vrischikam festival known as Panthrandu Vilakku falls in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, from roughly mid-November into early December. The famous Oachira Kali, a mock stick-and-mud battle held on the first two days of Mithunam in mid-June, is a striking thing to witness but lands in the middle of the monsoon, with heavy crowds and a slippery, muddy field; Irupathiettam Onam, a cattle festival with large bull effigies, comes 28 days after Onam. Festival dates shift with the Malayalam calendar, so confirm with the temple before you book.
The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International, roughly 105 km south; Kochi is the alternative from the north. Oachira has its own small railway station on the Kollam–Ernakulam line, and Kayamkulam Junction, about 11 km away, is the nearest station where express trains stop. By road the temple sits directly on National Highway 66, about 35 km north of Kollam town, so any Kollam–Alappuzha bus or taxi passes it.
There is no sanctum, no idol and no image-based darshan here — worship is in the open air under trees, so expect sun, rain and uneven ground rather than a queue and a shrine door. Modest, traditional dress is expected, and during Oachira Kali in June the Padanilam field is deep in mud and best watched from the edge by elderly visitors.

Is there an idol at Oachira Temple?
No. The temple has no idol and no sanctum sanctorum. Parabrahma, the formless universal consciousness, is worshipped in the open under the old trees of the 36-acre grove. This is the single thing that makes Oachira different from almost every other Kerala temple.
What is Oachira Kali and when does it happen?
Oachira Kali is a mock battle staged in a waterlogged field called the Padanilam, with participants using sticks and splashing muddy water to drum rhythms. Tradition connects it to the war exercises of soldiers of the old Kayamkulam and Ambalappuzha kingdoms. It is held on the first two days of the Malayalam month of Mithunam, usually mid-June, in full monsoon.
Can we combine Oachira with other places on a Kerala trip?
Yes. The temple stands on NH 66 between Kollam and Alappuzha, so it fits naturally into a backwaters itinerary — Kollam is about 35 km south and the Alappuzha backwaters lie a short drive north. Many families stop here on the drive rather than making a separate journey.
