Melukote's Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple, in Mandya district of Karnataka, enshrines Vishnu as Cheluvanarayana — also called Tirunarayana and, affectionately, Cheluvapille Raya. It is one of the most important Sri Vaishnava centres in the south, closely tied to the 11th–12th century acharya Ramanuja, who spent years at Melukote under the patronage of the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana; the temple in its present form dates from that period and is counted among the 108 Abhimana Kshetras of the tradition. Its best-known treasure is the Vairamudi, a diamond-set crown kept in government custody through the year and brought to the temple under guard only for the annual festival. The town itself sits on the Yadugiri hills at about 1,030 m, with the stepped Kalyani tank below and the Yoga Narasimha shrine on the rock above the Cheluvanarayana temple.
October to February is the easiest stretch — the hill air is cool and dry, and the walking around the temple, the Kalyani and the hill shrine is comfortable for elders. The great occasion is the 13-day Vairamudi Brahmotsava in March–April, when the diamond crown is placed on the utsava murti; the night procession draws several lakh devotees and Melukote is genuinely, punishingly crowded, with long waits and heavy traffic on the approach roads. Families travelling with older parents who want a quiet darshan should deliberately avoid those dates; the festival follows the lunar calendar, so confirm the year's dates with the temple before you book.
The nearest airport is Mysuru (Mandakalli), roughly 50–55 km away, though most visitors fly into Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, about 170 km by road, as it has far more flights. The convenient railheads are Mandya (around 35 km) and Pandavapura (closer still), with Mysuru Junction about 50 km away and better served by long-distance trains. By road Melukote is roughly 50 km from Mysuru and about 135–150 km from Bengaluru via NH-275 through Mandya; KSRTC buses run from Mysuru, Mandya and Pandavapura, and taxis cover the last hill stretch easily.
The main Cheluvanarayana temple stands at the foot of the hill and is reachable without much climbing, but the Yoga Narasimha shrine that most pilgrims also visit is on the rock above and involves a flight of stone steps that is steep in places and hot underfoot by midday — start early if elders are climbing. Traditional dress is expected, as at most South Indian temples, and photography inside the temple is generally not allowed; check the boards at the entrance.

Is Melukote a Divya Desam?
Sources differ. Many pilgrim guides list Melukote among the Divya Desams of Karnataka, while the standard listings count it as one of the 108 Abhimana Kshetras — shrines held in high regard by the Sri Vaishnava tradition without formally belonging to the 108 Divya Desams sung by the Alwars. Either way, it is one of the tradition's principal centres and inseparable from Ramanuja's life.
Can we see the Vairamudi crown on an ordinary day?
No. The Vairamudi and the other two crowns, the Rajamudi and the Krishnarajamudi, are kept in government custody and brought to Melukote under security only for the annual Brahmotsava. On other days you will have darshan of the deity in his usual adornment.
Can Melukote be done as a day trip from Mysuru or Bengaluru?
From Mysuru, comfortably — it is about 50 km each way and a half day is enough for the temple, the Kalyani and the hill shrine. From Bengaluru it is a long day of roughly 135–150 km each way; many families combine it with Srirangapatna or Mysuru and stay overnight instead. Darshan hours vary and change during festivals, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
How crowded is the Vairamudi festival?
Very. The procession night draws several lakh people into a small hill town, and movement, parking and accommodation all become difficult. It is a remarkable sight, but it is not a suitable trip for elders or small children unless you are prepared for long standing and crowds.
