Maihar Devi Temple, better known as the Maa Sharda Mandir, stands on Trikuta hill in Maihar, in the Satna region of Madhya Pradesh. The goddess here is worshipped as Sharda Devi, a form of Shakti, and the shrine is counted among the Shakti Peethas — tradition holds that the necklace (har) of Sati fell at this spot, which is how the town is said to have got its name, Maihar. The temple is traditionally dated to around the sixth century CE, and the climb of more than a thousand stone steps up the hillside is its most recognisable feature. Local tradition also links the shrine to the Bundelkhandi warrior-brothers Alha and Udal, remembered as devotees of the goddess, whose story is still sung in the region.
October to March is the comfortable window — the Madhya Pradesh heat has gone and the hill climb is manageable for elders. Both Navratris, Chaitra (March-April) and Sharad (September-October), are the big occasions here and the temple draws very large crowds; the queue on the steps can take hours and is genuinely punishing for older pilgrims, so an ordinary weekday outside festival season is the kinder choice for a frail traveller.
Maihar has its own railway station on the Delhi-Howrah main line, with direct trains from Delhi, Bhopal, Kolkata, Varanasi and Mumbai; the station is only a few kilometres from the foot of the hill. By air, the usual options are Jabalpur (about 160 km) and Khajuraho (about 140 km), both connected onward by taxi or bus. By road, Maihar sits on the main national highway through the region, with regular buses and taxis from Satna, Rewa, Jabalpur and Chitrakoot (about 70 km).
The shrine is on a hilltop reached by a flight of over a thousand steps — most sources put it at 1,063 to 1,064. A ropeway operates as an alternative for elderly pilgrims and anyone who cannot manage the climb, but it runs to its own schedule and stops during heavy rush or bad weather, so confirm with the temple before you travel. Carry water and plan the climb for early morning or late afternoon rather than midday.
