Kotilingeshwara Temple stands at Kammasandra village in Kolar district, near Kolar Gold Fields, and is dedicated to Shiva in the form of the linga. Its defining feature is a 108-foot (about 33 m) linga in the open air, faced by a Nandi roughly 35 feet high on a long raised platform — among the tallest linga installations anywhere. Around them, spread across roughly 15 acres, stand lakhs of smaller lingas of one to three feet each, installed over decades with the intention of reaching one crore, which is what gives the temple its name ("koti" meaning crore). The complex is modern rather than ancient — it was begun around 1980 — and also holds eleven smaller shrines to other deities and a tank for ritual ablutions.
October to February is the most comfortable stretch, when Kolar's days are dry and mild and walking the open linga fields is bearable. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, is the temple's biggest occasion and draws very large crowds — expect long waits, heavy traffic on the approach road and packed parking; Mondays through the Shravana month are also busy. March to May is hot and the site has little shade.
The nearest airport is Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, roughly 100 km away, and Bengaluru city is about 100 km by road via NH-75 (Old Madras Road) through Hoskote and Bangarapet, generally 2.5 to 3 hours. The closest railhead is the small Koramandal station about 8 km away; Bangarapet, about 14 km off, is the larger and better-connected junction with passenger trains from Bengaluru City and Whitefield. Kolar town is about 35 km away, and KSRTC and private buses run to Kammasandra, with the bus stop under a kilometre from the temple.
The linga field is spread over about 15 acres in the open with very little shade, and seeing it properly means a fair amount of walking on stone and gravel underfoot with footwear removed in the temple areas. Elderly pilgrims should plan an early-morning visit and carry water. Darshan and office timings change on festival days — confirm with the temple before you travel.

How far is Kotilingeshwara Temple from Bangalore and can it be done as a day trip?
It is about 100 km from Bengaluru, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way by road via NH-75. A day trip is comfortable if you leave early; many families combine it with Kolar town or Kolar Gold Fields on the way back.
Is this an ancient temple?
No. Kotilingeshwara is a modern temple, developed from around 1980 onward at Kammasandra. Local tradition connects the site to an older devotee named Manjunatha said to have installed lingas here in atonement, but the temple you see today, including the 108-foot linga, is recent construction.
Can we install a linga in our family's name here?
The installation of lingas by devotees is what has built the site up over the years, and the temple has run such an arrangement. Rates, sizes and current availability are decided solely by the temple administration — contact the temple office directly before you travel. No agent or tour operator can arrange it, nor arrange any form of special or faster darshan; the temple runs its own queues.
