Janaki Kund is a bathing ghat on the Mandakini river in Chitrakoot, about 2 km upstream from Ram Ghat, where a broad flight of steps runs down to a straight, quiet stretch of water enclosed by the wooded slopes of Pramod Van. Tradition holds that this was Sita's bathing place during the fourteen years Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent in exile at Chitrakoot, and a small shrine beside the steps preserves marks revered as her footprints. It is not a large or ornate temple complex — it is a river site, and pilgrims come chiefly to bathe, sit on the steps and offer worship, usually as one stop on the wider Chitrakoot circuit that also takes in Ram Ghat, Kamadgiri, Hanuman Dhara and Sphatik Shila. Many visitors reach it by rowboat from Ram Ghat rather than by road, which is part of why the spot is remembered.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Chitrakoot sits roughly between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius and the river banks are pleasant for elders. Chitrakoot draws crowds on every Amavasya, and is heavily thronged at Deepawali, Somvati Amavasya, Makar Sankranti, Sharad Purnima and Ram Navami — the Diwali period in particular is very crowded, with ghats and lodgings full, so book well ahead or pick an ordinary weekday if you want a quiet dip. Avoid the peak monsoon, when the Mandakini runs high and bathing is unsafe, and May–June, when the heat is severe.
The nearest railhead is Chitrakoot Dham Karwi on the Jhansi–Manikpur line, about 8–10 km away, with Manikpur Junction around 35 km and Satna about 75 km as alternatives with wider connections. The nearest airport is Prayagraj, roughly 130–135 km, with Khajuraho about 175 km and Varanasi around 275 km; Prayagraj and Satna are the usual arrival points for travellers coming from South India via Delhi or Bhopal. By road Janaki Kund is about 2 km from Ram Ghat on the Chitrakoot circuit, easily covered by auto or taxi, and many pilgrims instead take a shared rowboat along the Mandakini from Ram Ghat.
The approach to the water is by a long flight of stone steps that stay wet and slippery, and there are no handrails along much of it — elders and anyone unsteady on their feet should have someone alongside and should not attempt to bathe alone. River depth and current change with the season; follow the local boatmen and priests on where it is safe to enter, and do not go in during or just after the monsoon.

Is Janaki Kund a temple or a river bathing spot?
Primarily a bathing ghat on the Mandakini. There is a small shrine beside the steps housing marks venerated as Sita's footprints, and other temples such as Sankat Mochan Hanuman and Raghuvir stand nearby, but the site itself is the river, its steps and the wooded bank. Most people spend twenty to forty minutes here as part of a larger Chitrakoot round.
How far is Janaki Kund from Ram Ghat, and can we go by boat?
About 2 km. Rowboats run between Ram Ghat and Janaki Kund along the Mandakini and this is the way many pilgrims prefer to arrive; boats are also available for the return. Fares and running depend on the water level and time of day, so agree the fare before boarding. Autos and taxis cover the same stretch by road if the river is high.
Can elderly family members manage a visit here?
Yes, if they stay on the upper steps and do not attempt the descent to the water without support. The stone steps are steep and slippery and there is little shade. Visit early in the morning in the October–March months, keep a companion at hand, and avoid Amavasya and Diwali days when the crowd on the steps is heavy.
Are there fixed visiting hours?
The riverbank is open ground and people bathe from early morning, but the small shrine beside it keeps its own hours and these can change. Confirm with the temple locally before you plan your day around it. No agent or operator can arrange priority entry or a special darshan anywhere in Chitrakoot — the queues are run by the temple boards themselves.
