Hanuman Dhara is a hilltop shrine to Lord Hanuman at Chitrakoot, the pilgrim town straddling the Uttar Pradesh–Madhya Pradesh border where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are believed to have spent much of their exile. Its distinguishing feature is the dhara itself — a thin, constant stream of water that falls from the rock face onto the Hanuman image and collects in tanks below. Tradition holds that after Hanuman returned from burning Lanka, his body still burning, Rama released an arrow into the hillside to bring forth this cooling spring; the district's own account says Rama stayed here with Hanuman and calmed him. Smaller shrines to Rama, Sita and Lakshmana stand alongside, and the terrace gives a wide view over the Chitrakoot valley, so most families take it as part of the larger Chitrakoot circuit with Kamadgiri, Ram Ghat and Sphatik Shila.
October to March is the sensible window — the Bundelkhand summer runs brutally hot and the climb is exposed, while the monsoon makes the steps slippery. Diwali brings the five-day Deepotsav at Ram Ghat and every Amavasya, especially Somvati Amavasya, draws crowds counted in the lakhs across Chitrakoot; Hanuman Jayanti and Tuesdays and Saturdays are also heavy at this shrine. If you are travelling with elders, pick an ordinary weekday outside those dates.
Chitrakoot Airport at Devangana, about 12 km from town, opened in 2024 but has limited service — Prayagraj airport, roughly 130–140 km away, is the dependable option, with Varanasi around 260 km. The nearest railheads are Karwi and Chitrakoot Dham (Karwi), both under about 12 km from the shrine, well connected towards Prayagraj, Jhansi and Satna. By road Hanuman Dhara sits a few kilometres out of the town centre on the hillside; autos, taxis and buses run there routinely, and the drive from the main ghats takes well under half an hour.
The temple is on a hilltop reached by a long, steep flight of stone steps in the open sun — sources differ on the exact count, but it is a real climb and not an easy one for elders, knee patients or small children. A ropeway to the top has been built and operates in a few minutes, but it can be shut for weather or maintenance, so confirm with the operator or your hotel on the day before you commit an elderly parent to the trip. Carry water, and expect to go barefoot on hot stone near the shrine. Timings for the temple and the ropeway change; confirm before you travel.

How many steps are there at Hanuman Dhara, and is there any alternative for elderly pilgrims?
It is a long, steep stone staircase; published figures vary widely, so treat any single number you read online with caution and plan for a hard climb with rest stops. A ropeway operates to the hilltop and takes only a few minutes, which is what most families with elders use. It can be closed for weather or maintenance, so check on the day itself.
What is the water that falls on the Hanuman idol?
A natural stream trickles continuously from the rock above the shrine onto the image and into tanks below. Tradition holds that Rama created it with an arrow to cool Hanuman after he burnt Lanka. Devotees treat the water as sacred and it is said not to run dry.
Can Hanuman Dhara be covered along with the rest of Chitrakoot in one day?
Yes. Most pilgrims combine it with Kamadgiri parikrama, Ram Ghat on the Mandakini, Sphatik Shila and Janki Kund in a single day. Allow extra time for Hanuman Dhara because of the ascent, and avoid Amavasya days and Diwali week if you want a manageable crowd. Darshan is on the temple's own queue — no one can arrange faster entry.
