Gurudwara Paonta Sahib stands on the bank of the Yamuna in Sirmaur district, on the spot where Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, founded the town in 1685 after Raja Medini Prakash of Sirmaur invited him to settle in his state. The Guru stayed here for several years — among the longest periods he spent in one place — and much of his writing, along with the poetry of the scholars he gathered around him, belongs to this time; the Battle of Bhangani was fought nearby in 1688, and a separate Gurdwara Bhangani Sahib stands about a kilometre away. Within the complex are the marked spots that give the shrine its character: Sri Talab Asthan, where the Guru is said to have paid his men, Sri Dastar Asthan, associated with turban-tying contests, and the Kavi Darbar Asthan on the riverside where poetic assemblies were held. The white, dome-crowned building also keeps a museum and library holding weapons and pens attributed to the Guru, and a golden palanquin offered by devotees; langar is served to everyone who comes.
October to March is the comfortable stretch — clear days, cool evenings, and the riverside easy to walk; December and January nights drop close to freezing, so elders need proper woollens. Hola Mohalla in March and Baisakhi in April are the two big gatherings at the gurdwara and the town fills heavily on those days, so families travelling with older relatives may prefer a quieter week. Avoid May and June, when the valley runs 35-40°C, and expect the Yamuna high and the weather unsettled through the July-September monsoon.
The nearest airport is Dehradun's Jolly Grant, roughly 70 km east by road; Chandigarh airport is the other option, about 165 km away. Dehradun railway station, around 45-50 km away, is the closest convenient railhead and takes direct trains from Delhi and other cities; Yamunanagar is a second choice at about 65 km. By road Paonta Sahib sits on the Himachal-Uttarakhand border with good highway access — roughly 45 km from Nahan, 117 km from Haridwar, about 180 km from Shimla, and a straightforward drive from Delhi via Yamunanagar; HRTC and Uttarakhand buses stop in the town itself, and the gurdwara is a short walk from the bus stand.
As at every gurdwara, the head must be covered by all visitors, men and women, and shoes are left at the counter outside — scarves are usually available at the entrance if you have not carried one. Tobacco and alcohol may not be taken inside the complex. The main hall is at ground level and easy for elders, though the riverside Kavi Darbar area involves some walking on open ground. Photography rules inside the darbar sahib and museum are set by the management, so ask before you use a camera or phone.

Why is Paonta Sahib important to Sikhs?
Guru Gobind Singh founded the town in 1685 on the invitation of the Raja of Sirmaur and lived here for several years, one of his longest stays anywhere. A large body of his writing and the poetry of the scholars in his court belongs to this period, and the Battle of Bhangani was fought close by in 1688. The gurdwara marks the spot on the Yamuna where he stayed.
Can non-Sikhs visit the gurdwara?
Yes. Gurdwaras are open to people of every faith, and Paonta Sahib draws both Sikh and Hindu pilgrims. Cover your head, remove your shoes, and you are welcome in the darbar sahib and at the langar, which is served free to all.
Is accommodation available at the gurdwara, and what are the timings?
The gurdwara complex runs a sarai for pilgrims and the town has private hotels as well; rooms at the sarai are allotted by the management and cannot be reserved through any agent. Prayer, langar and museum timings are set by the gurdwara committee and do change, so confirm with the gurdwara directly before you travel, especially around festival days.
What else can we see near Paonta Sahib?
Gurdwara Bhangani Sahib is about a kilometre away with views over the river, and there are temples to Rama, Krishna and the goddess Yamuna in the town. Nahan is about 45 km away, and the Renuka lake and its October-November fair are roughly 50 km from the town.
