Brajeshwari Devi Temple, also written Bajreshwari and known locally as Nagarkot Wali Mata, stands in Kangra town below the old Kangra Fort. It is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, and tradition holds that the left breast of Sati fell here; the Goddess is worshipped not as a carved image but as a pindi, a sacred stone, in her form as Vajreshwari, "goddess of the thunderbolt". The shrine's wealth made it a target through the centuries — it was plundered by Mahmud of Ghazni in the early 11th century and again under Firoz Shah Tughlaq — and the building standing today was raised in the 1920s after the 1905 Kangra earthquake levelled the old one. The walled complex, with its stone fortification and nagarkhana (drum house), sits close enough to Kangra Fort and the Banganga that most families see both in one morning.
October to March is the comfortable window — clear Dhauladhar weather, cool days, and an easy walk from the bus stand for elders. The two big draws are Makar Sankranti in mid-January, when the pindi is covered in a "Ghrit Mandal" of butter churned from desi ghee and decorated with dry fruit, and the two Navratris (around March-April and September-October). Both bring very heavy crowds and long waiting lines; if you are travelling with elderly parents or small children and want a quiet darshan, come outside these dates.
The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra Airport, DHM), roughly 10-15 km away, with flights from Delhi; taxis are available at the terminal. On the narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar, Kangra station is about 2-3 km from the temple, but most pilgrims on long-distance trains get down at Pathankot Junction, about 85-90 km away, and continue by taxi or bus. By road the temple is roughly 1.5 km from Kangra bus stand off NH-154 (older maps mark it NH-88), about 20 km from Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, so it pairs naturally with a Dharamshala trip.
There is no climb or trek — the temple is inside Kangra town and reached on level ground from the bus stand, which suits elderly pilgrims. Do plan around Makar Sankranti if the form of the deity matters to you: during the Ghrit Mandal period the pindi is fully covered in butter and is only uncovered after several days. Darshan hours and any special ritual arrangements change around festivals, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Yes, this is the usual Kangra circuit. Jwalamukhi, Chamunda Devi and Chintpurni are all within a few hours' drive of Kangra, and Dharamshala is about 20 km away, so families commonly cover Brajeshwari on a two or three day Shaktipeeth route.
How difficult is the temple for elderly parents?
It is one of the easier Shakti Peethas. There is no hill climb or long stairway — the shrine sits in Kangra town about 1.5 km from the bus stand and vehicles can drop you close by. The difficulty is crowd pressure on Navratri and Makar Sankranti days, not the terrain.
