Shri Renuka Ji is a Shakti shrine on the bank of Renuka Lake in Sirmaur district, dedicated to Mata Renuka, wife of the sage Jamadagni and mother of Parashurama. The lake itself is treated as the embodiment of the goddess rather than merely her setting, and pilgrims bathe in it as part of the visit; tradition holds that its outline resembles the profile of a reclining woman, and the smaller Parashurama Tal below it is said to mark the son who chose to remain at his mother's feet. The main temple to Renuka Ji stands with a cluster of smaller shrines around it, inside a forested wildlife sanctuary. Renuka is the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh and has been a Ramsar-listed wetland since 2005, so the yatra is as much a walk beside water and sal forest as a temple darshan.
October to March is the comfortable window, with clear, cool weather and an easy walk around the lake; carry warm clothing for elders in December and January. The main draw is the five-day Renuka Ji Fair (Renuka Ji Mela) in the first fortnight of November, beginning on Prabodhini Ekadashi, when Parashurama's palanquin is carried in procession from Jamu Koti to be reunited with his mother — it draws very large crowds, and accommodation near the lake is heavily booked, so families with elderly members may prefer the quieter weeks before or after. Avoid the July-September monsoon, when the hill roads are prone to landslides.
The nearest airports are Chandigarh and Dehradun, both roughly 100-150 km away by road, with taxis and buses onward. The convenient railheads are Ambala Cantt and Chandigarh, each about 95 km, and Kalka a little further; Dehradun station is around 105 km. By road Renuka Ji is about 37-40 km from Nahan, the district headquarters, and roughly 315 km from Delhi via Paonta Sahib or Nahan, with the last stretch on winding hill road.
This is a lakeside site rather than a hill climb, but the temple complex and the walk along the lake involve uneven paths and some steps, and the shrines are spread out — allow extra time if you are travelling with elders. Modest dress is expected, as at any temple. During the November fair the approach road and parking fill up well before the temple, so plan a longer walk in. Confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Is Renuka Ji a Shakti Peetha?
It is not counted among the classical Shakti Peethas. It is venerated as the shrine of Mata Renuka, mother of Parashurama, and the lake is regarded as the goddess herself — a Devi tirtha of its own standing rather than a Peetha in the traditional list.
Can we visit Renuka Ji as a day trip from Nahan or Paonta Sahib?
Yes. It is roughly 37-40 km from Nahan and a comparable hill drive from Paonta Sahib, so a morning departure and evening return is comfortable. Staying overnight is worthwhile if you also want the lake walk, boating and the mini zoo, and is advisable during the November fair when road traffic is slow.
What is the Renuka Ji Mela and is it worth timing our trip around it?
It is a five-day fair held in the first fortnight of November, starting on Prabodhini Ekadashi, marking Parashurama's annual visit to his mother. There are processions of local deities, folk music and dance, and large trade stalls. It is the most atmospheric time to come, but also the most crowded — if mobility or quiet matters more to you, choose another month.
Are there facilities for elderly pilgrims at the lake?
There is basic tourist accommodation and food near the lake, including HPTDC-run options, and the ground around the temple is relatively level compared with most Himachal shrines. Paths are still uneven in places, so a walking stick and unhurried planning help. Book rooms early for November.
