Gupt Godavari is a pair of natural caves in the hills of Chitrakoot, on the Madhya Pradesh side of the Chitrakoot region, where a stream of water runs along the cave floor and disappears underground. The name means "hidden Godavari" — tradition holds that the river flows here in secret, seen only inside the rock. Tradition also associates the site with the years Rama, Sita and Lakshmana spent in exile at Chitrakoot: the wider cave holds a Ram Darbar with two stone seats said to be the thrones of Rama and Lakshmana, and a small pool called Sita Kund. The second cave is the distinctive one — long, narrow and low, with ankle- to knee-deep water the whole way through, so pilgrims wade rather than walk to reach the shrine at its end.
October to February is the comfortable window — Chitrakoot's winter is mild and the cave water is manageable. Amavasya days and Diwali Deepdan draw very large crowds to Chitrakoot as a whole, and Gupt Godavari fills up with pilgrim groups on those days; if you are travelling with elders, pick an ordinary weekday. In heavy monsoon (July to September) the water inside can rise and the narrow cave is sometimes shut on the day — confirm locally before you set out.
The nearest railhead is Chitrakoot Dham Karwi on the Jhansi–Manikpur line, well connected to Delhi, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Varanasi; the caves are a short taxi ride from there, and roughly 13–18 km from Ramghat and the main Chitrakoot temple cluster, about 30 minutes by road. The nearest airports are Prayagraj (Bamrauli), roughly 110–130 km, and Khajuraho, about 175 km; both have taxis for the transfer. Satna, about 75 km, is the usual alternative railhead and has good bus and taxi links.
This is a wet cave, not a walk-in temple. You wade through ankle- to knee-deep water for the length of the narrow cave, barefoot on uneven rock, with a low roof and a tight entrance in places — carry clothes you can roll up and a change for afterwards. It is not suitable for anyone with poor balance, knee trouble or claustrophobia, and small children need to be carried. The Ram Darbar cave alone can be visited more easily if the second cave is too much.

Do I have to walk through water at Gupt Godavari?
Yes, in the second cave. The stream runs along the floor for the entire passage, ankle-deep in places and knee-deep in others, and there is no dry walkway around it. The first cave, with the Ram Darbar and Sita Kund, is far easier to visit.
Is Gupt Godavari suitable for elderly parents?
The first cave, yes, with a helping hand. The second is a low, narrow, water-filled passage on uneven rock and most elders find it hard going. Many families let the older members do the Ram Darbar darshan and wait while the younger ones go through the long cave.
Can we visit during the monsoon?
The surroundings are at their greenest, but the water inside rises and the narrow cave is sometimes closed for safety on heavy-rain days. Ask locally, or confirm with the temple, on the morning you plan to go.
