Sri Dodda Ganapathi Temple stands on Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi, in the older southern part of Bengaluru, and is dedicated to Ganesha in his seated form. "Dodda" means big in Kannada, and the name comes from the deity itself — a single monolithic Ganesha carved from one block of stone, one of the largest such images in the city, filling almost the whole sanctum so that devotees stand close beneath it. Tradition credits its founding to Kempe Gowda I, who established Bengaluru in the sixteenth century under the Vijayanagara Empire, the same ruler associated with the neighbouring Dodda Basavana Gudi (Bull Temple) of 1537. It is best known for the Benne Alankara, when the image is covered in a thick coating of butter, later distributed to devotees, and for standing at the heart of the Kadalekai Parishe, the groundnut fair that has been held here for centuries.
November to February is the easiest stretch — Bengaluru's weather is mild and dry, and the temple's biggest occasion, the Kadalekai Parishe (groundnut fair), falls on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Hindu month of Karthika, usually in late November or early December. That fair fills Bull Temple Road with groundnut sellers and enormous crowds, so it is wonderful to witness but hard going for elders and small children. Ganesha Chaturthi (August–September) also draws heavy queues. For a quiet darshan, pick a weekday morning outside these dates.
Kempegowda International Airport is roughly 40 km north of Basavanagudi, about an hour and a half by road depending on traffic. KSR Bengaluru City railway station (Majestic) is around 6 km away, and Yeshwantpur about 10 km. By Namma Metro, National College station on the Green Line is the nearest stop, roughly a kilometre and a half from the temple; autos and city buses run from there, and the Bull Temple, Bugle Rock and Gandhi Bazaar are all within short walking distance of the shrine.
On the two days of Kadalekai Parishe the stretch of Bull Temple Road outside the temple is taken over by the fair and vehicle access is heavily restricted, so plan to walk the last stretch. Confirm darshan and alankara timings with the temple before you travel, as they vary on festival days.

Is Dodda Ganapathi Temple the same as the Bull Temple?
No, but they are neighbours. The Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi) enshrines a giant monolithic Nandi; Dodda Ganapathi Temple, a short walk away on the same road beside Bugle Rock, enshrines the large monolithic Ganesha. Most visitors see both in a single trip, along with Bugle Rock park.
What is the butter decoration people talk about?
It is the Benne Alankara, in which the Ganesha image is covered with a thick layer of butter, sometimes dressed with dry fruit. It is done on special occasions rather than daily, and the butter is later given out to devotees. Ask the temple when the next alankara is planned before you fix your dates.
Is the temple manageable for elderly pilgrims?
Yes, in general. It is a compact city temple with no hill climb or long trek, and it sits in a well-connected neighbourhood with autos and parking nearby. The difficulty is crowding — on Ganesha Chaturthi, Sankashti days and during Kadalekai Parishe the queue and the street outside are very congested, so an ordinary weekday morning is kinder.
