Deotsidh, on a hilltop at Chakmoh village on the Hamirpur–Bilaspur border, is the cave shrine of Sidh Baba Balak Nath — worshipped as a child-yogi (bal yogi) of the Siddha tradition and revered across Himachal, Punjab, Haryana and Jammu. The shrine is not a built sanctum but a natural cave in the rock, in which the image of Baba is installed; tradition holds that Baba Balak Nath meditated here after his years at Shahtalai, about 6 km away, where he is said to have herded cattle for Mata Ratno. The offering here is distinctive: devotees bring rot, a thick sweet bread of flour, ghee and sugar or gur, and goats given in Baba's name are kept at the shrine rather than sacrificed. Since 1987 the temple has been administered by the Shri Baba Balak Nath Temple Trust under the Himachal Pradesh government.
March to April is the main season: the month-long Chaitra mela runs roughly from mid-March to mid-April and is the biggest gathering of the year, so expect very heavy crowds and long waits through that period. October to November gives clear, cool hill weather and far lighter footfall. Whenever you go, avoid Sundays if crowds are a concern — Sunday is Baba's special day and the shrine is packed; May and June are hot and the monsoon months of July to September bring rain and slippery approaches.
The shrine is about 45 km from Hamirpur town. The nearest railhead is Una (roughly 55–65 km by road, figures vary by source), which is the practical rail arrival point for most pilgrims; the nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra) near Dharamshala, roughly 120–130 km away. By road it is comfortably reached from Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Una and Hamirpur, with HRTC buses and shared taxis running to the shrine base; most families from South India fly to Chandigarh or Gaggal, or take a train to Una, and continue by road.
The shrine sits on a hilltop and the last stretch to the cave is on foot, up steps — plan for this if elders or anyone with knee or heart trouble is travelling. On the question of women entering the cave itself: by long-standing custom women did not enter, and a raised platform facing the cave was built for their darshan; news reports since 2016 said the trust lifted the restriction, and the practice currently followed is best confirmed directly with the temple trust before you travel. Timings and any seasonal arrangements should also be confirmed with the temple.

Are women allowed inside the Baba Balak Nath cave at Deotsidh?
Traditionally they were not — women offered darshan from a raised platform built opposite the cave, the custom being linked to Baba Balak Nath's celibacy. Reports since 2016 say the temple trust removed that restriction. Because official listings and news reports do not agree, please check the current practice with the Shri Baba Balak Nath Temple Trust, Deothsidh, before planning your visit.
What should we offer at the temple?
The customary offering is rot — a thick bread made of wheat flour, ghee and sugar or jaggery — presented at the shrine. Some devotees also offer a goat in Baba's name; these animals are kept and cared for at the shrine and are not sacrificed.
Should we also visit Shahtalai?
Most pilgrims do. Shahtalai, about 6 km from Deotsidh, is associated with Baba Balak Nath's years of penance and with Mata Ratno, and an annual fair is held there. It is an easy add-on to the same day's travel.
Is Deotsidh open through the year?
Yes, the shrine is visited year-round. The Chaitra mela in March–April draws the largest crowds; the monsoon months are wet and the hill approach can be slippery. Confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel, as they are set by the trust and can change.
