The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur is a living Vishnu temple built by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana, consecrated in the early 12th century (1116-1117 CE) at what was then the Hoysala capital on the banks of the Yagachi. The deity is Chennakeshava - Kesava, a form of Vishnu, the name meaning the handsome or beautiful Kesava; inscriptions also record the temple by its older name, Vijayanarayana. It is built in soapstone on a star-shaped raised platform, and what pilgrims and visitors come for as much as the darshan is the carving: bands of figures running around the outer walls, the celebrated madanikai bracket figures under the eaves, and the lathe-turned pillars inside, among them the Narasimha pillar covered in miniature work. In 2023 it was inscribed by UNESCO as part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, and it is usually visited together with the Hoysaleswara temple at Halebidu, about 17 km away.
October to February is the comfortable window - mild mornings and evenings, and easy on elders walking the open stone platform. March and April turn hot, and April is the peak of the heat. The temple's big annual event is the Chennakeshava Rathotsava, the chariot festival held over two days in March or April, when the utsava murti is drawn through the streets; expect large crowds and slow movement around the temple on those days, so families travelling with very old or very young members may prefer a quieter week. Festival dates shift with the lunar calendar - confirm with the temple before you travel.
Belur is in Hassan district, roughly 220 km northwest of Bengaluru by road, with Hassan town about 35-40 km away. The nearest railhead is Hassan, connected to Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Arsikere and Shivamogga, with buses and taxis onward to Belur. For flights, Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru is the usual arrival point at roughly 240 km, while Mangaluru International Airport is closer at about 170 km over the Ghats. Most yatra groups drive from Bengaluru or Mysuru and pair Belur with Halebidu, 17 km away, and often Shravanabelagola.
This is an active temple as well as a protected heritage monument, so footwear is left outside and the walk around the platform and prakara is done barefoot on open stone that gets very hot by midday - elders are much more comfortable going early morning or late afternoon, and thick socks help. The approach is level with only a few steps onto the platform, so there is no climb or trek involved. Rules on photography inside the sanctum are set by the temple authorities and can change; ask at the entrance rather than assuming.

Is Belur Chennakeshava temple still a working temple or only a monument?
It is both. Daily worship continues and it is a living Vishnu temple, while the structure itself is a protected monument and part of the UNESCO Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas listing since 2023. Darshan hours and puja schedules are set by the temple, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
Can Belur and Halebidu be done in one day?
Yes. They are about 17 km apart and most visitors see both in a single day, commonly with Shravanabelagola added if starting early from Bengaluru or Mysuru. Allow a couple of unhurried hours at Belur itself - the carving is the reason to be there.
Can a tour operator arrange special or faster darshan here?
