The Kedareshwara temple at Balligavi is a Shiva temple built in soapstone in the late 11th century, in the transitional style between the Western Chalukyas and the Hoysalas who followed them. It is a trikuta temple — three shrines under three tiered towers, opening into a shared pillared hall; the cells hold Shivalingas, with a Vishnu image in the northern shrine. Balligavi itself was one of the great temple-and-learning towns of medieval Karnataka, the birthplace of the Virashaiva saint Allama Prabhu and of the Hoysala queen Shantala Devi, and more than eighty medieval inscriptions have been found here across Shaiva, Vaishnava, Jain and Buddhist traditions. The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance, and pilgrims often pair it with the nearby Tripurantakeshwara and Panchalingeshwara shrines in the same village.
October to February is the easiest stretch — the monsoon has passed, the Malnad countryside is green and the days are mild enough for elders walking the temple platform. Mahashivaratri, in February or March, is the main Shaiva occasion and brings local crowds, though this is a small village shrine rather than a mass-pilgrimage site. June to September brings heavy rain to this part of Shivamogga district and the approach roads can be slow.
Balligavi is in Shikaripura taluk, about 21 km from Shikaripura town and roughly 72 km from Shivamogga city by road. The practical railhead is Shivamogga Town (SMET), from which the temple is a road journey of a little over an hour and a half; Shivamogga also has a small airport, while Hubballi airport is about 130 km away and Bengaluru's Kempegowda International is roughly 330 km by road. There is no direct public transport to the temple gate from Shivamogga — most families take a bus or train to Shikaripura or Shivamogga and hire a car for the last leg.
This is an ASI-protected monument in a village setting, not a large managed temple complex. Worship is limited and there is no daily crowd management, catering or cloakroom on site, so carry water and confirm with the local temple caretaker or the ASI office before travelling if you intend to be present for a specific puja. Modest dress is expected, and footwear is removed at the entrance to the shrine.

Is Balligavi Kedareshwara a living temple or only a monument?
It is both — an ASI-protected monument of national importance where worship still takes place, but on a modest village scale rather than with the full daily schedule of a large trust temple. If you are travelling specifically for a puja or abhisheka, confirm with the temple locally before you set out.

The village holds several other medieval shrines, including the Tripurantakeshwara temple, dated to around 1070 CE and known for its carved exterior walls, and the Panchalingeshwara temple. Most visitors cover them on foot in the same half-day, along with the small on-site collection of recovered sculpture.
Is the temple manageable for elderly members of the family?
Yes — the temple sits on flat ground with no climb, hill road or long flight of steps, and the walk from the parking area to the shrine is short. There is little shade and few facilities, so plan a morning or late-afternoon visit and carry water.
