Erumely Sree Dharmasastha Temple in Kottayam district is dedicated to Ayyappa in his form as Dharmasastha, and it is the traditional starting point of the Sabarimala pilgrimage rather than a destination on its own. The town holds two shrines a short walk apart — the larger Valiyambalam and the smaller Kochambalam (Cheriyambalam) — built in the sloped-roof Kerala style, with tantric rights held by the Thazhamon Madom and pilgrim facilities run by the Travancore Devaswom Board. Standing between the two temples is the Vavar Masjid, a mosque honouring Vavar, whom tradition holds to be a companion of Ayyappa; Sabarimala pilgrims customarily offer respects there before setting out, and this shared observance is what Erumeli is best known for. It is also where the Petta Thullal is performed, the ritual dance in which pilgrims smear their bodies with colour and charcoal and carry wooden arrows and maces, re-enacting the tradition of Ayyappa's victory over Mahishi.
The pilgrimage season runs from mid-November through mid-January (Mandala–Makaravilakku), and this is when Erumeli is at its most alive — and at its most crowded. The Petta Thullal falls on the 27th of Dhanu, around mid-January, and the town is packed shoulder to shoulder that day; elders and small children will find it very hard going. For a calm visit with cool, dry weather, come between December and February outside the Petta Thullal dates, or in the quieter months after the season ends. The temple also holds a ten-day annual festival in Kumbham (February). Monsoon months, June to September, bring heavy rain to this hill country. Confirm dates and darshan hours with the temple before you travel.
Erumeli is in the eastern hills of Kottayam district and is reached by road; KSRTC and private buses run to it from Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kanjirappally and Kochi, and taxis are easy to arrange. Kottayam is the usual railhead, roughly an hour and a half away by road, with Chengannur the other commonly used station at a broadly similar distance. Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is the nearest airport, about 100-120 km away depending on the route, usually a three to four hour drive via Kottayam. From Erumeli, Sabarimala's Pamba base is reached by road, or on foot along the traditional forest path.
Erumeli itself is flat and easy — the temples, the mosque and the Petta Thullal ground are all within walking distance in the town. What is not easy is the traditional trek that begins here: the Erumeli-to-Sabarimala forest route is about 61 km on foot over roughly two days, through Azhutha, Kallidamkunnu and the steep Karimala climb, and it is the hardest of the Sabarimala approaches. Do not plan it for elders, young children, or anyone with heart, knee or breathing trouble; the road route to Pamba exists for exactly this reason. Sabarimala itself observes the well-known 41-day vratham and dress code, and the Kerala-style temple dress code (mundu for men, no shirts inside; saree or set-mundu for women) applies at Erumeli too.

Do we have to visit Erumeli before going to Sabarimala?
It is customary but not compulsory. Pilgrims taking the traditional forest path start from Erumeli, offer respects at the Dharmasastha temples and the Vavar Masjid, and then walk. Pilgrims going by road to Pamba often stop at Erumeli on the way, and many first-time pilgrims (Kanni Ayyappas) come specifically for the Petta Thullal.
Can women visit the Erumeli temple?
Erumeli is a separate shrine from Sabarimala and is not subject to the same restriction; women do visit the Dharmasastha temples here. The Petta Thullal, however, is by long custom performed by male pilgrims. If you are travelling as a family, check the current position with the temple office before you plan the trip.
Is the Vavar Masjid open to Hindu pilgrims?
Yes. Ayyappa devotees have offered pepper and prayers at the Vavar Masjid for generations, and the mosque sits between the two temples in the same short stretch of the town. Dress and behave as you would at any place of worship, and follow whatever the mosque committee asks on the day.
