The Sri Annapoorneshwari Temple at Horanadu is a Shakti shrine in the Malenadu hills of Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, standing on the banks of the Bhadra river at about 830 m in the Western Ghats. The goddess here is Annapoorneshwari — Parvati in her form as the giver of food, shown in the iconography with a vessel of cooked food in one hand and a ladle in the other. Tradition attributes the shrine's founding to the sage Agastya. What sets Horanadu apart from most temples of its size is the annadana: pilgrims are fed a free meal, and the temple's own rhythm is built around feeding devotees before the afternoon and evening worship, which is why families travel here as much to eat in the goddess's hall as to take darshan.
October to March is the comfortable window — the Western Ghats monsoon has passed, the ghat roads are dry, and the hill air suits elders. June to September brings very heavy rain, leeches and slow driving on the forest roads. Weekends, school holidays and festival days fill the queue and the dining hall well beyond normal; a weekday visit is far easier on older travellers. Check the temple's festival calendar before fixing dates, as the shrine's own observances are set locally.
The nearest airport is Mangaluru International, roughly 120–130 km away by the ghat road; Bengaluru's Kempegowda airport is the other option at around 300 km. For trains, Mangaluru Junction to the west and Kadur to the east are both roughly 120–130 km out, and you take a taxi or bus onward from either. By road, Horanadu is about 9–10 km from Kalasa town and roughly 95–100 km from Chikkamagaluru town, with KSRTC and private buses running from Chikkamagaluru, Mangaluru and Bengaluru. The last stretch is a narrow hill road through coffee estates and forest — allow more time than the distance suggests.
This is a hill shrine reached only by winding ghat roads, so anyone prone to travel sickness or with mobility difficulty should plan the drive carefully and avoid the monsoon months, when landslips and road damage are possible in this part of the Western Ghats. As at most South Indian temples, traditional and modest dress is expected; confirm the current dress-code and darshan arrangements with the temple before you travel, as these are set by the temple management and can change.

Is food really free at Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple?
Yes — annadana, a free meal served to visiting devotees, is central to this shrine and is one of the main reasons families come here. It is served in the temple's dining hall at fixed sittings, and the timings are set by the temple, so ask at the counter when you arrive.
Can a travel agent arrange special or quicker darshan here?
No. The queue and all darshan arrangements are run entirely by the temple management. Nobody outside the temple can reserve, skip or speed up a darshan, and you should treat any such offer as false. We can arrange your travel, stay and transfers only.
How far is Horanadu from Kalasa, and can it be combined with other temples?
Horanadu is about 9-10 km from Kalasa, where the Kalaseshwara Temple stands on the Bhadra river, so the two are commonly done together in a day. Chikkamagaluru town, roughly 95-100 km away, works well as a base for a two- or three-day Malenadu circuit.
