Rather than starting with a resort name, start with your priorities: budget, whether it's a honeymoon or family trip, how much you value the house reef, and how far you're willing to travel from Malé. Those answers narrow hundreds of islands to a handful, which we then help you compare.
Overwater/water villas sit above the lagoon with private decks and direct sea access — romantic but pricier and less ideal for toddlers. Beach villas sit on the sand, often better value and family-friendly. Many resorts also offer private-pool villas across both categories.
Resorts near Malé atoll are reached by a quick speedboat — cheaper and easy on young children. Far atolls need a seaplane or domestic flight plus speedboat — more expensive and time-consuming, but often with quieter, more pristine reefs. Transfer is a real cost and time factor, so weigh it early.
Half-board (breakfast and dinner) suits those who want flexibility to try different restaurants, while all-inclusive covers meals and many drinks for predictable costs — handy given remote islands have no outside dining. Your choice affects both budget and daily rhythm.
