The Maldives is a year-round destination, but the experience shifts with the seasons. November to April is the dry season — calm seas, sunny skies and the clearest water, with December to March the peak. May to October is the wetter season, bringing short showers and better value, plus excellent conditions for surfing and diving. This guide breaks down the weather month by month so you can match your Maldives holiday to what matters most — sunshine, price or marine life.

Dry season: November to April

This is the classic Maldives window — calm, sunny and dry, with glassy lagoons and superb underwater visibility. December to March is the peak, popular with honeymooners and families over the holidays, so demand and prices are highest. Book several months ahead for the best resorts and villas.

Green season: May to October

The wetter months bring short, passing showers rather than all-day rain, often between long sunny spells. The trade-off is quieter islands and better value, making it a smart choice for a first overwater villa on a budget. It is also prime time for surfers and many diving deals.

Best time for diving & marine life

Diving is rewarding year-round. Visibility peaks in the dry season, while the green season can bring rich plankton that draws manta rays and whale sharks. South Ari Atoll offers whale-shark encounters throughout the year, so we can plan around the marine life you most want to see.

When to visit for value

If price is your priority, aim for the green season shoulder months such as May, June, September and early October. You still get plenty of sunshine, but rates on resorts and villas are noticeably softer than at Christmas or New Year.

Planning around Indian holidays

Peak Indian travel periods — Diwali, Christmas, New Year and summer school breaks — fall in high demand windows, so book early. For a calmer, better-value trip, consider travelling just outside these dates. We are open Mon–Sat, 9am–6pm to help you plan.
