Khardung La is a bucket-list drive, a pass often cited among the highest a vehicle can cross, gateway from Leh into the Nubra Valley. The climb through switchbacks to the prayer-flagged summit is unforgettable, with peaks stretching in every direction. Our Khardung La tours pair the crossing with Nubra's dunes and monasteries, and because the pass is so high we acclimatise you thoroughly in Leh and arrange your Inner Line Permit. Trips start from around Rs 16,999, with the final quote shaped by your hotels, season and travel dates.

A pass into legend

Khardung La has near-mythic status among travellers and bikers, its summit board a favourite photo stop. Whether or not it is the single highest motorable road, the sense of achievement on reaching the top, with prayer flags snapping in the thin, cold air, is very real. Beyond lies the reward of the Nubra Valley.

Respecting the altitude

At the summit the air holds little oxygen, so we keep stops brief and never linger long. This is precisely why acclimatisation in Leh comes first, giving your body days to adjust before the crossing. Travellers with heart or breathing conditions should seek medical advice before booking.

How the crossing works

The road climbs from Leh through South Pullu, where permits are checked, to the summit, then descends via North Pullu into Nubra. An Inner Line Permit is required and we arrange it for you. Our drivers know the pass and its shifting conditions well.

Best time to cross

May to September is the reliable window, when the pass is clear of heavy snow. Even then the summit is freezing, so warm layers, gloves and a hat are essential. Weather can close the road at short notice, and we keep timings flexible for safety.

Pairing with Nubra

Most guests cross Khardung La as part of a Nubra itinerary, spending a night in the valley among the dunes and villages. This makes the long drive worthwhile and spreads the altitude gain sensibly. We tailor the number of nights to your pace.
