Turtuk is one of India's most remote and enchanting villages, opened to visitors only in 2010. Set deep in the Nubra region near the Shyok River, it is a Balti settlement of apricot orchards, stone lanes and centuries-old culture unlike anywhere else in Ladakh. Reaching it means crossing high passes and following the Shyok through raw desert mountains. Our Turtuk tours pair this extraordinary village with the wider wonders of the Nubra Valley.

Why visit Turtuk

Turtuk feels like stepping into another world. As one of the last villages before the border and a rare Balti enclave in India, it offers a culture, cuisine and landscape found nowhere else in Ladakh. Apricot orchards, warm homestays and a slow pace make it unforgettable.

The journey there

Getting to Turtuk is part of the magic. The route climbs over Khardung La into the Nubra Valley, then follows the turquoise Shyok River deep towards the frontier. Every bend brings dramatic desert-mountain scenery.

How to reach

Turtuk lies around 200km from Leh, roughly a full day's drive via Khardung La and Diskit. There is no airport nearby, so travel is by road. We arrange sturdy vehicles and experienced drivers for the mountain terrain.

Best time to visit

May to September is the season to visit, when the passes are open and apricots ripen. The village is snowbound and largely cut off in winter, so summer and early autumn are ideal.

Where to stay

Turtuk is best enjoyed through its welcoming homestays and small guesthouses, where you can taste Balti food and local apricots. Many guests spend a night in Turtuk and another in the Nubra Valley.
