Kovalam and Varkala anchor the southern beach scene near Trivandrum. Kovalam is the classic resort bay with a lighthouse and easy swimming; Varkala's dramatic cliffs and café-lined promenade give it a laid-back, scenic charm.
For calm, head to Marari near Alleppey or the estuary sands of Poovar. Far north, Bekal Fort crowns a windswept beach, while Kappad near Kozhikode carries a slice of maritime history.
