Kerala's Western Ghats rise into a string of cool, green hill stations, each with its own character. Together they offer crisp air, big views and a welcome change of pace.
Munnar is the jewel of Kerala's highlands — hillsides quilted with tea, dotted with colonial-era estates and framed by peaks. Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam and Top Station make it an easy and rewarding base.
For something wilder and quieter, Wayanad offers misty forests, the Edakkal Caves and waterfalls, while Vagamon charms with rolling meadows and pine woods — both lovely for gentle walks and photography.
Thekkady blends highland scenery with wildlife and spice. A plantation walk reveals cardamom, pepper and cinnamon, while a Periyar lake safari brings the chance to spot elephants and deer at the water's edge.
Kochi International Airport (COK) is the main gateway for Munnar and Thekkady, both a scenic three-to-four-hour drive away. Kozhikode (CCJ) is nearer for Wayanad. The roads climb through beautiful, winding hill country.
September to March offers cool, clear highland weather and lush greenery, with December and January the peak. Nights can be chilly, so carry a light layer. The monsoon paints the hills their greenest but brings mist and rain.
