The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is a summer walk of rare beauty, linking a string of turquoise glacial lakes cradled between grassy passes and snow-dusted peaks. Setting out from the meadows above Sonmarg, the trail unfolds through wildflower valleys, shepherd camps and mirror-still waters such as Vishansar and Gangbal. It is a moderate-to-challenging trek best attempted between July and early September, when the passes are clear and the meadows are at their greenest. Holiday Vibez arranges the well-travelled route with sensible acclimatisation, so you can savour the scenery rather than worry about logistics.

Overview of the trek

The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is a classic point-to-point Himalayan walk, usually spread over six to eight days on the trail plus travel days. It rewards walkers with an ever-changing procession of alpine lakes, high passes and green shepherd meadows. Fitness and a head for sustained walking help, but it needs no technical climbing skill. We build in acclimatisation and keep to the standard, well-travelled route.

Best time & weather

The trek season runs roughly from July to early September, once the winter snow has melted from the passes and the meadows have greened. Earlier or later, high snow and cold can block the route. Days are pleasant and bright; nights at altitude are cold, so warm layers and a good sleeping bag are essential.

  • Peak greenery and lake colour: July–August
  • Cooler, clearer light: early September
  • Roads to some high areas close in deep winter

How to reach

This is domestic travel, so no visa or permit is needed for Indian travellers. Fly to Srinagar (SXR) — direct flights operate from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with one-stop connections via Delhi from most other cities. From Srinagar it is a scenic drive to Sonmarg, the trailhead.

Fitness & preparation

Prepare with regular cardio and a few practice hikes before you travel. Break in your boots, carry warm layers even in summer for the higher meadows, and stay well hydrated. Mobile signal is patchy in the remote valleys, so let family know your rough itinerary in advance.

What's included

Our Kashmir trek packages typically bundle Srinagar transfers, accommodation on non-trek nights, the guided trek arrangement and support on the trail. Flights, personal gear and expenses of a personal nature are usually additional. We monitor conditions and share a detailed kit list once you book.
