The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases: the first lifts you from Gulmarg to the Kongdoori bowl, and the second climbs towards the snowfields near Apharwat peak. It ranks among the highest cable cars anywhere, and the scenery shifts dramatically as you rise — from wildflower meadows to bare, snow-dusted heights. Each phase can be enjoyed separately or together.
The upper reaches hold snow well into the warmer months and become a full winter playground from December to February.
Fly to Srinagar (SXR) — direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with one-stop links via Delhi from other cities — then drive up to Gulmarg, a scenic couple of hours away. As domestic travel, Indian travellers need no visa or permit. Local travel is by car or taxi.
For green meadows and clear gondola views, visit between March and October. For snow and skiing at the top, December to February is the season. The upper station is cold year-round, so carry warm layers even in summer. Roads to some high areas can close in deep winter.
Gondola tickets are ticketed by phase and can sell out at busy times, so plan an early start. Dress warmly for the top station regardless of season, wear sturdy shoes for snow, and use good sun protection at altitude. Mobile signal can be patchy on the higher slopes.
