High in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is home to one of India's largest and most important monasteries, set against a backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The dramatic journey crosses the 13,700-foot Sela Pass and passes serene alpine lakes. Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal, which we arrange for you, and it is a permit, not a visa. Most South Indian travellers fly to Guwahati first, so flights add to the land price.
Meet at Guwahati and drive towards Dirang or Bomdila, easing into the mountains. Overnight en route.
Cross the spectacular Sela Pass and Sela Lake, stop at Nuranang Falls, and arrive in Tawang by evening.
Visit the great Tawang Monastery, the War Memorial and local craft centres at a gentle altitude-friendly pace.
Drive to the beautiful Madhuri Lake and surrounding high-altitude scenery, then return to Tawang.
Begin the descent back towards Bomdila or Guwahati, breaking the drive with scenic halts and an onward flight the next day.
