High in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is home to one of India's largest and most important monasteries, set against a backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The dramatic journey crosses the 13,700-foot Sela Pass and passes serene alpine lakes. Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal, which we arrange for you, and it is a permit, not a visa. Most South Indian travellers fly to Guwahati first, so flights add to the land price.

Why visit Tawang

Tawang rewards the long mountain drive with one of India's grandest monasteries, dramatic Himalayan passes and serene alpine lakes. It is a place of deep Buddhist heritage and raw high-altitude beauty, ideal for travellers who love spectacular scenery.

Highlights of the journey

The road to Tawang is as memorable as the destination:

  • The great Tawang Monastery
  • Crossing the 13,700-foot Sela Pass
  • Madhuri and Sela high-altitude lakes
  • Nuranang Falls and the War Memorial

Inner Line Permit

Indian citizens need an Inner Line Permit to visit Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang. This is a domestic permit, not a visa, and we assist with arranging it as part of your booking. Please share your details in good time so we can process it smoothly.

How to reach Tawang

Fly into Guwahati (GAU), then take a scenic two-day mountain drive via Bomdila and Sela Pass. Most South Indian travellers fly in first, so flights add to the land package price. We arrange sturdy vehicles and experienced hill drivers.

Best time and altitude tips

Roughly April to October offers the most reliable road access, while winter brings snow and possible closures at Sela Pass. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated and rest on arrival, as Tawang sits at high altitude and the passes are higher still.
