Port Blair is the capital and gateway of the Andaman Islands, and a compelling destination in its own right. This is where you land at Veer Savarkar Airport and where the islands' poignant colonial history comes alive at the Cellular Jail. Between the moving light-and-sound show, boat trips to Ross Island and easy beaches like Corbyn's Cove, there is plenty to fill a few memorable days. It is also your springboard to Havelock, Neil and beyond.

The gateway to the Andamans

Every Andaman trip begins in Port Blair, home to the only airport and the main ferry terminals. Beyond its practical role, the city rewards visitors with real depth, from the sobering Cellular Jail to boat trips, museums and beaches. A couple of days here sets the scene beautifully before you head to the outer islands.

History and heritage

Port Blair holds the islands' most significant historical sites.

  • The Cellular Jail and its evening light-and-sound show
  • Ross Island's colonial ruins
  • Museums covering marine life, timber and indigenous culture

How to reach Port Blair

Direct flights connect Port Blair with Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad in about two to five hours. From here, ferries including private cruises and government services fan out to Havelock, Neil and other islands, and we pre-book onward crossings for you.

Best time to visit

October to May brings dry, pleasant days ideal for sightseeing and boat trips, with December and January busiest. The June to September monsoon can bring heavy rain and rough seas that affect boat services, so we plan around settled weather.

Permits and practicalities

Indian nationals need no permit to visit Port Blair or the main tourist islands. It is best to book the Cellular Jail show and any onward ferries in advance, and to carry some cash, as this is your last easy point for ATMs before the outer islands.

Who it suits

A Port Blair-focused trip suits history lovers, short-break travellers and anyone wanting to ease into the islands before venturing further. It also pairs neatly as the opening leg of a longer Havelock and Neil itinerary.
