Yamunotri, at about 3,293 m in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkashi district, is the seat of the goddess Yamuna and marks the sacred source of the Yamuna river. It is the first of the four shrines of Uttarakhand's Chota Char Dham circuit, visited before Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The present temple dates from the 19th century and has been rebuilt more than once after damage from snow and floods. Its most distinctive feature is the Surya Kund, a thermal spring beside the temple whose water is hot enough that pilgrims lower rice and potatoes tied in muslin cloth into it and carry the cooked food away as prasad; the nearby rock called Divya Shila is worshipped before offerings are made to Yamuna.
May–June and September–October are the workable windows: the temple is open only about six months a year, traditionally opening on Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) and closing on Bhai Dooj (October/November). May and June are the peak Char Dham months and the trek, ponies and Janki Chatti lodgings are genuinely crowded; September–October is quieter and clearer but colder. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain, landslides and road closures on the Garhwal routes, and are best avoided by families travelling with elders.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, roughly 200 km away, and Dehradun is also the nearest major railhead at about the same distance, with Rishikesh and Haridwar as alternative rail arrival points. By road the approach is via Dehradun/Rishikesh to Barkot and then Janki Chatti, the last motorable point; Yamunotri is about 130 km from Uttarkashi town. Buses and shared taxis run on this route in season, and most pilgrims break the journey at Barkot or Janki Chatti.
Yamunotri cannot be reached by vehicle. From Janki Chatti it is a steep uphill climb of roughly 5–6 km to the temple, at high altitude and in thin, cold air. Ponies, porters and palanquins (dandi/kandi) are hired at Janki Chatti and are the usual choice for elders, but the ride itself is jolting and exposed. The shrine is closed through winter, when the goddess is worshipped at her winter seat in Kharsali village. Uttarakhand requires online registration for the Char Dham Yatra, and opening and closing dates change every year — confirm the current dates, registration rules and any health advisory with the temple committee or state tourism before you travel.

Is Yamunotri open all year?
No. It opens for roughly six months, traditionally from Akshaya Tritiya in April or May until Bhai Dooj in October or November, and closes for winter because of heavy snow. During the closed months the goddess is worshipped at Kharsali village near Janki Chatti. Exact dates are announced afresh each year, so confirm before booking.
Can elderly parents do the Yamunotri trek?
Many do, but honestly: it is about 5–6 km steeply uphill from Janki Chatti at over 3,000 m. Ponies, dandis and porters are available at Janki Chatti for those who cannot walk it. Anyone with heart, breathing or knee trouble should get a doctor's clearance first, keep an acclimatisation night at Barkot or Janki Chatti, and carry their regular medicines.
What is the Surya Kund and can we cook food in it?
Surya Kund is a hot spring next to the temple. Pilgrims tie rice and potatoes in a cloth, dip them in the spring until cooked, and take the food home as prasad. It is a long-standing practice at the shrine; follow the temple staff's instructions at the kund, as the water is scalding.
Do darshan timings change, and can they be booked in advance?
Timings are set by the temple management and can change with weather, festivals and yatra crowds, so confirm with the temple before you travel. Queues are run by the temple board and local administration; no operator or agent can reserve, skip or speed up darshan for you.
