Patal Bhuvaneshwar is an underground shrine of Shiva inside a limestone cave near the village of Bhubneshwar, about 14 km from Gangolihat in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district, at roughly 1,350 m. Pilgrims enter through a narrow tunnel and descend around 90 feet below ground into a chain of chambers running some 160 m, where stalactite and stalagmite formations are worshipped as Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu and, in the local telling, thirty-three koti deities; one formation is revered as Shesha, the serpent said to bear the earth. Tradition holds that the cave was first found by King Ritupurna of the Surya dynasty in the Treta Yuga, and Adi Shankaracharya is said to have visited it around the 12th century, from which the present form of worship is dated. What draws people is the shrine itself rather than any tower or gopuram — the whole temple is the cave, lit electrically and led through by the resident priests.
October to June is the practical window, with the pleasantest weather from October to November and again from March to June; the Kumaon monsoon (July to September) brings landslides and road closures on the hill approach and makes the cave steps slippery. Mahashivaratri is the main festival here and the cave sees its heaviest rush then — with only a single narrow passage in and out, expect long slow-moving lines. Winter is clear but cold, and the descent is chilly and damp.
Patal Bhuvaneshwar is reached only by road. The district administration lists it as about 14 km north of Gangolihat, roughly 91 km from Pithoragarh town, about 90 km from Naini Saini airport at Pithoragarh (small airport, limited flights) and about 270 km from Kathgodam railway station, which is the usual broad-gauge railhead for Kumaon. Most travellers from outside the state fly to Pantnagar or take a train to Kathgodam and drive up via Almora and Gangolihat, an 8-10 hour hill drive; shared taxis and state buses run to Gangolihat, from where local taxis cover the last stretch.
This is a physically demanding shrine. Entry is through a narrow, steep, often wet tunnel with about 90 feet of descent on slippery stone steps, using fixed iron chains for support, and one or two sections are low enough that visitors must crouch or crawl. Elders with knee, back, heart or breathing trouble, and anyone uneasy in enclosed spaces, should think carefully before going in — there is no alternative route and no way to turn back quickly once inside. Entry is in small groups accompanied by the temple priests. Reports differ on whether cameras and phones are permitted inside, so confirm at the entrance, and confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Can elderly parents or young children manage the cave?
Fit elders often do it slowly with family support, but it is a genuine descent — steep wet steps, iron chains, and crouching through narrow gaps. Anyone with knee, hip, cardiac or respiratory problems, or claustrophobia, is better off waiting outside; there is no easier route and no lift. Small children usually need to be carried through the tight sections.
How long does the visit inside take?
Most groups spend roughly 45 minutes to an hour inside, moving with the priest who explains each formation. Entry is regulated group by group, so the wait outside can be much longer than the visit itself, especially on Mahashivaratri and weekends.
Is Patal Bhuvaneshwar open through the year?
The cave itself is open year-round, but the hill roads through Kumaon can be blocked by landslides during the July-September monsoon and journeys get unpredictable. Plan for October-June and check road conditions and temple timings before setting out.
