Kainchi Dham is a Hanuman temple and ashram in the Kumaon hills, founded in 1964 by the saint Neem Karoli Baba on land given by a local devotee, Purnanand. It is not an ancient shrine and holds no place in a classical set like the Jyotirlingas or Char Dham; its pull is the living memory of Maharaj-ji, who spent the last decade of his life here and whose own murti was installed in the complex on 15 June 1976. The main Hanuman temple stands on a raised platform above the old yagyashala, and the ashram takes its name from the two hairpin bends of the Nainital-Almora road below it, which meet like the blades of a pair of scissors (kainchi). Devotees from across India, and a steady stream of foreign visitors drawn by Maharaj-ji's Western disciples, come simply to sit quietly before Hanuman-ji and take prasad.
March to June and September to November are the comfortable months, with clear hill weather and open roads; the monsoon (July-August) brings landslides and blocked stretches on the Nainital-Almora road. The one date to plan around is 15 June, the Pratishtha Divas and annual bhandara marking the ashram's founding, when a mela is held and the ashram feeds an enormous crowd — the road and the small ashram compound are genuinely overwhelmed that day, so elders travelling for a peaceful darshan are usually better served by any other week. Winter here is very cold; confirm with the temple before you travel.
The nearest airport is Pantnagar, roughly 70 km away, with Delhi's IGI airport the practical option for most travellers at around 300 km. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, about 37 km, well connected to Delhi and Lucknow. By road the ashram sits directly on the Nainital-Almora highway, about 17 km from Nainital and 9 km from Bhowali, reached by shared or hired taxi; the last stretch is hill road with sharp bends, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
Use of mobile phones and cameras inside the temple premises is restricted — expect to leave your phone with your footwear or in the vehicle, and dress modestly. The ashram is a working ashram, not a tourist site: overnight stay is limited and requires prior permission directly from Shree Kainchi Dham Mandir Trust, and at the time of writing the ashram was not accepting stay requests. Plan to stay in Nainital or Bhowali and visit for the day. Parking on the narrow highway below the ashram is very tight on weekends and around 15 June.

How far is Kainchi Dham from Nainital and how long does the drive take?
About 17 km on the Nainital-Almora road. It is a short distance but a winding hill drive, so budget 40-50 minutes each way, and more on weekends when traffic backs up at the bends near the ashram.
Can we stay overnight at the Kainchi Dham ashram?
Rooms inside the ashram are very limited, need prior permission from the Shree Kainchi Dham Mandir Trust, and are not always open to visitors — at the time of writing the ashram was not accepting stay requests. Almost all pilgrims stay in Nainital or Bhowali and come for a day visit. Please check directly with the trust; no travel agent can arrange a room or a place in the darshan queue here.
Is 15 June a good day to visit with elderly parents?
Honestly, no. 15 June is the founding-day bhandara and mela, when well over a lakh people are said to be fed, and both the hill road and the small compound are packed. If your family wants that atmosphere, go — but for a calm darshan with elders, choose an ordinary weekday in April-May or October.
