The Walkeshwar Temple stands on Malabar Hill in South Mumbai and is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Valuka-Ishwar, the "lord of sand". Tradition holds that Rama halted at this spot on his way to Lanka and, having no lingam to worship, shaped one out of the sea sand — and that an arrow shot into the ground brought up fresh water, giving the adjoining Banganga Tank its name (bana, arrow, and Ganga). The temple and its tank were built in 1127 CE by Lakshman Prabhu, a minister of the Shilahara rulers of Thane, were destroyed under Portuguese rule in the 16th century, and were rebuilt in 1715 with funds from the Mumbai businessman Rama Kamat. The defining sight is not the shrine building, which is a modern reconstruction, but the rectangular stone tank stepped down on all four sides, spring-fed and still sweet-watered despite the sea being minutes away, ringed by old maths, dharamshalas and small temples in what is among the oldest continuously inhabited quarters of the city.
November to February, when Mumbai is dry and the walk through the lanes is comfortable; the monsoon months of June to September make the tank steps slippery and the approach lanes wet. The Banganga Festival, a two-day Hindustani classical music event held on the tank steps each January by MTDC with the Indian Heritage Society, is a good time to combine darshan with the music. Amavasya and purnima days draw local worshippers, and Mahashivratri and the November Dev Diwali lamp-lighting around the tank are the most crowded days of the year — plan a quieter weekday morning if you are travelling with elders.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at Sahar is roughly 25-27 km away, about an hour or more by road depending on traffic. On the Western Line, Charni Road is the closest suburban station at about 2-3 km and Grant Road about 3 km; both are a short taxi or auto ride away. By road the temple sits at the top of Malabar Hill, reached via Walkeshwar Road; BEST buses stop nearby, and taxis are the easiest option since the final lanes are narrow. Parking near the complex is very limited, so a drop-off is better than driving in.
Vehicles cannot reach the tank itself. The last stretch is a walk down narrow residential lanes, and the tank is a stepped stone pool with flights of steps on all sides — elderly visitors will need a steady arm and non-slip footwear, especially after rain. A working Hindu cremation ground adjoins the complex, which some families prefer to know in advance. Timings and any festival-day arrangements should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.

Is Walkeshwar Temple a Jyotirlinga?
No. It is not one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Its standing comes from its age and from the Ramayana tradition attached to the site — it is the oldest surviving Hindu place of pilgrimage in Mumbai rather than part of any formal set of twelve or fifty-one shrines.
Is the Banganga Tank the same as the Walkeshwar Temple?
They are part of one complex. The Walkeshwar Temple is the Shiva shrine; the Banganga Tank is the large stepped stone water tank beside it, along with a cluster of smaller temples, maths and dharamshalas. Most visitors see both in the same trip.
How much time should we keep for the visit?
An unhurried hour to ninety minutes is usually enough for darshan, a walk around the tank and the smaller shrines. Add time on Mahashivratri, purnima and Dev Diwali, when the lanes and steps get very crowded.
