Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir at Prabhadevi in central Mumbai is a Ganesha temple whose original small shrine was built in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, and which is now run by the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple Trust. The presiding image is carved from a single block of black stone, with the trunk turned to the right — the form devotees call Siddhivinayak, believed to grant what is asked of it — with four arms holding a lotus, an axe, a rosary and a bowl of modaks, an eye marked on the forehead, and the goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi on either side. The sanctum sits beneath a gilded inner dome, and its wooden doors and surrounding pillars carry the Ashtavinayak, the eight Ganesha shrines of Maharashtra. Families travel here for the first prayer before a wedding, a new house, an exam, a business or a journey, and many walk the last stretch to the temple on foot as a vow.
October to February is the easiest stretch for elders — Mumbai's humidity drops and the walk from the road to the temple is bearable. Ganesh Chaturthi (August or September, by the Hindu calendar) is the temple's biggest festival and the city is at its most alive then, but the crowds are genuinely punishing and the queues stretch far down the surrounding roads. Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi — a Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday — draws lakhs of devotees overnight and is the hardest day of all for anyone frail; ordinary Tuesdays are also much busier than the rest of the week.
The temple is in Prabhadevi, between Dadar and Worli. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at Andheri East is the nearest airport, roughly 18–20 km away by road (about 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Dadar is the nearest suburban railhead, on both the Western and Central lines and served by most long-distance trains into Mumbai, about 2.5–3 km from the temple by taxi or auto. Siddhivinayak station on the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line (Line 3), opened in 2025, is the closest stop of all — a short walk from the temple gates. By road it is on S. K. Bole Marg, easily reached from the Western Express Highway or the Bandra–Worli Sea Link; parking around the temple is very limited, so a taxi or metro is far simpler than a private car.
This is a busy city temple with a long, barriered queue system rather than a climb, so it suits elders — but plan for standing time and heat, and carry water and any medication. Photography is not permitted inside, and cameras, laptops and large bags are generally not carried in; the temple has cloakroom and locker facilities near the entrance. Dress is ordinary modest Indian temple wear. Darshan timings and queue arrangements change around festivals — confirm with the temple before you travel.

Why is the Siddhivinayak idol special compared with other Ganesha temples?
The trunk of the image turns to the right, which is uncommon; in tradition a right-turned trunk is held to be the more demanding and more powerful form. Which day should we avoid if we are travelling with elderly parents?
Tuesdays, and above all Angarki Sankashti Chaturthi and the Ganesh Chaturthi days, when the crowd is at its heaviest and the wait outdoors is long. A weekday morning outside the festival season is far gentler. No agent or operator can shorten or arrange a place in the queue — the temple trust runs its own darshan lines, and everyone stands in them.
Can we combine Siddhivinayak with other shrines in Mumbai in one day?
Yes. Mahalakshmi Temple, Babulnath and Haji Ali Dargah are all within a few kilometres, and Mumba Devi Temple is further south in Bhuleshwar. Traffic, not distance, decides the day — mornings move much better than evenings.
