Grishneshwar, in Verul village near Ellora, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva and is traditionally counted as the last of the twelve. The linga sits in a low garbhagriha, and unlike most Jyotirlinga shrines devotees here are customarily allowed to approach and touch it by hand, which is the main reason many families make the trip. Tradition holds that the shrine takes its name from a devotee, Ghushma (also given as Kusuma), whose daily worship of earthen lingas moved Shiva to appear at this spot. The temple was damaged in the medieval centuries, restored by Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji, in the 16th century, and rebuilt in its present form in the 18th century under Holkar patronage of Indore; its walls carry dense carved sculpture inside and out, and a large Nandi faces the sanctum.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Marathwada is dry and mild and you can pair the temple with the Ellora Caves 1-2 km away in the same morning. Mahashivratri (February or March) and the whole month of Shravan (roughly July-August), especially Mondays, draw very large crowds and long queues, so elders should either avoid those dates or plan a long wait. Confirm darshan and aarti times with the temple before you travel.
The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) Airport, IXU, about 35 km away, with flights from Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad; a taxi takes roughly an hour and a half. The nearest railhead is Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) station, about 30 km, and MSRTC buses toward Ellora and Kannad run from the Central Bus Stand. By road the temple is about 30 km northwest of the city on the Ellora road, and roughly 300 km from Mumbai and 230 km from Pune.
Two rules catch visitors out. Men are required to remove their upper garments, shirt and vest, before entering the garbhagriha; women wear a saree or salwar-kameez. Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside and must be left in the lockers outside, usually for a small charge, so carry as little as possible. The sanctum is reached down a few steps and the floor is often wet, which matters if you are walking an elder in.

Can we touch the Shiva linga at Grishneshwar?
Yes. Grishneshwar is one of the Jyotirlingas where devotees are traditionally permitted to approach and touch the linga and perform abhishek themselves. This is at the temple board's discretion and is usually restricted on very heavy days such as Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays, so treat it as customary rather than guaranteed.
Do men really have to take off their shirts?
Yes, for the inner sanctum. Men remove shirts and vests before entering the garbhagriha, as per the temple's own custom. A dhoti or angavastram is the usual dress. The rest of the premises has no such requirement.
Can we visit Grishneshwar and the Ellora Caves on the same day?
Comfortably. The temple is roughly 1-2 km from the Ellora Caves, so most itineraries do darshan in the morning and the caves after. Note the caves have their own weekly closed day and ticketing, separate from the temple, so check that before fixing the date.
Is there a queue system or can darshan be arranged in advance?
Darshan runs on the temple board's own queue on the day, and no agent or operator can reserve, skip or speed it up. On ordinary weekdays the wait is short; on Shravan Mondays and Mahashivratri it can be several hours. Confirm current arrangements with the temple before you travel.
