The Vitthal Rukmini Temple at Pandharpur, on the bank of the Chandrabhaga (Bhima) river in Solapur district, is the principal shrine of Vitthal or Vithoba, worshipped as a form of Vishnu, with his consort Rukmini (Rakhumai) in an adjoining shrine. The deity is shown as a dark standing figure with both hands resting on the hips, upon a brick — the image Marathi devotional poetry has sung about for centuries. A shrine stood here by the late 12th century, with inscriptions from the 13th century recording additions, though most of what a visitor sees today is 17th-century and later Deccan work with domed motifs and lobed arches. It is the destination of the Warkari tradition and of the annual Wari, the walking pilgrimage in which dindis carry the palkhis of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram on foot to Pandharpur; unusually for a shrine of this scale, ordinary devotees are permitted padasparsha, touching the feet of the image.
November to February is the most comfortable stretch for elders — dry, mild days, and the town is workable. The two great occasions are Ashadhi Ekadashi (June–July), which closes the Wari, and Kartiki Ekadashi (November); both are extraordinary to witness and both are punishingly crowded, with lakhs of Warkaris in town and darshan queues reported to run several kilometres. March to May is very hot in this part of Maharashtra and best avoided by older travellers.
Pandharpur town has its own railway station, roughly 3 km from the temple, but with limited services; Kurduvadi (about 50 km) and Solapur (about 70 km) are the better-connected railheads, with trains from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. For flights, Solapur airport is about 70 km away but sees very few scheduled services, so most visitors fly into Pune International Airport, roughly 210 km by road. State transport and private buses run regularly from Pune, Mumbai, Solapur and Kolhapur, and the road approach is straightforward year-round.
If you are travelling with elders, be clear about which dates you are booking. Around Ashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi the whole town is given over to the pilgrimage — roads are closed to vehicles, walking distances from parking or lodging to the temple become long, rooms are scarce and queues can stretch for kilometres in the open. Outside those weeks the visit is far gentler. Darshan arrangements, including whether padasparsha is open on a given day, are decided by the temple committee alone; confirm with the temple before you travel.

Can we touch the feet of the idol at Pandharpur?
Yes — Pandharpur is known for allowing padasparsha darshan, where devotees may touch the feet of Vitthal. It is not guaranteed on every day; on very heavy festival days the temple committee may permit only mukh darshan from a distance. Please check with the temple before you travel.
Do we have to walk the Wari to visit the temple?
No. The Wari is a voluntary walking pilgrimage undertaken by Warkaris over several weeks. You can travel to Pandharpur by train, bus or car at any time of year and take darshan like any other visitor.
Can a travel agent arrange a quicker or special darshan?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The queue and all darshan arrangements are run entirely by the temple authorities. We can arrange your travel, stay and transfers; the darshan line itself is the temple's.
Is a bath in the Chandrabhaga part of the visit?
Traditionally, pilgrims bathe in the Chandrabhaga (the Bhima river, which bends around the town) before going for darshan. It is optional. Water levels and currents vary with the season, so elders should take local advice at the ghat rather than entering unaided.
