Sthaneshwar Mahadev is an ancient Shiva temple in the old Thanesar quarter of Kurukshetra, and it is the shrine the city itself is named after — Sthanu-ishvara, the lord of the Sthanu Tirtha. Tradition holds that the Pandavas and Krishna worshipped Shiva here before the Mahabharata war and received his blessing for victory, and that the linga in the sanctum was first installed by Brahma. Historically the shrine gave its name to Sthanvishvara, the capital of the Pushyabhuti (Vardhana) rulers, whose best-known king was Harshavardhana in the 7th century; the building pilgrims see today was raised much later under Maratha patronage, credited to Raghunath Rao Peshwa. Its most distinctive feature is the sacred water tank adjoining the temple, the Sthanu Tirtha, which pilgrims treat as inseparable from the darshan itself and which is a principal halt on Kurukshetra's 48-kos parikrama.
October to March is the sensible window — Haryana's summers run brutally hot and the pre-monsoon months are hard on elders. Mahashivratri (February or March) is the temple's own great day, with decoration, night worship and langar, and it is genuinely packed. The city as a whole fills up again for the International Gita Mahotsav around Gita Jayanti in November or December, and on Somvati Amavasya and eclipse-bathing days, when Kurukshetra's tirthas draw very large crowds; travel then only if you want the festival, not a quiet darshan.
The nearest airport is Chandigarh (about 90-100 km by road, roughly two hours); Delhi's IGI airport is the bigger option at around 160-170 km. Kurukshetra Junction (KKDE) is the railhead, on the Delhi-Ambala main line with frequent trains, and the temple is a short auto-rickshaw ride away in old Thanesar. By road Kurukshetra sits just off NH-44 (the Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh highway), an easy 3-4 hour drive from Delhi.

Is Sthaneshwar Mahadev one of the twelve Jyotirlingas?
No. It is a very old and highly revered Shiva shrine — the presiding shrine of Kurukshetra and a key stop on the 48-kos parikrama — but it is not counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Sources describe the linga as swayambhu and traditionally attributed to Brahma's installation.
Is the temple difficult for elderly pilgrims?
No. It stands on flat ground in the town, with no climb, trek or long flight of steps, so it is among the easier shrines in North India for older travellers. The main strain is heat and festival-day crowding, both avoidable by going between October and March on an ordinary day.
What else in Kurukshetra should we see on the same trip?
Most pilgrims combine Sthaneshwar Mahadev with Brahma Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar, Jyotisar (where the Gita is traditionally said to have been spoken), and Bhishma Kund at Narkatari. All are within short drives, so a comfortable one- to two-day itinerary covers the main tirthas. Confirm darshan and aarti times with the temple before you travel, as they change with the season and festivals.
