Bhima Devi Temple at Pinjore is the excavated remains of an early medieval Shakti temple complex, dated by archaeologists to roughly the 9th to 11th centuries and laid out in the Panchayatana plan — a main shrine with four subsidiary shrines around it. Excavations begun in 1974 by the Haryana State Department of Archaeology and Museums recovered more than a hundred carved panels and images of Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha and the goddess, along with figures of dancers, wedding processions and daily life; the sculpture is close enough in style and subject to the Khajuraho group, including its erotic panels, that the site is often called the Khajuraho of North India. The temple was destroyed centuries ago, and local and scholarly accounts hold that its stone went into the walls of the adjoining 17th-century Mughal garden now known as Yadavindra Gardens. Today the ruins and the recovered sculpture stand as an open-air site museum, opened in 2009, spread beside the gardens; across the road is the small, still-worshipped Bhimeshwar Mahadev temple, which tradition links to Bhima of the Mahabharata.
October to March is the comfortable window — Pinjore sits at the foot of the Shivalik hills and winters are cool and clear, while May and June are genuinely hot for elders walking an open-air site with little shade. Navratri brings devotion to the working temples around Pinjore, and the Yadavindra Gardens next door draw their largest crowds during the summer mango festival and on weekends and public holidays, when parking and queues at the garden gate get heavy. The sculpture museum itself is rarely crowded even then.
The nearest airport is Chandigarh International Airport at Mohali, about 30 km away, with the nearest major railheads at Kalka, roughly 5-6 km, and Chandigarh, about 20-25 km. Pinjore lies directly on the Chandigarh-Kalka-Shimla highway (NH-5), so it is an easy 40-minute taxi or bus ride from Chandigarh, and the site sits immediately beside the entrance to Yadavindra (Pinjore) Gardens, so any driver in the area knows it.
Understand before you plan the trip that the Bhima Devi temple complex is an archaeological site and open-air sculpture museum, not a functioning shrine — there is no daily puja or darshan in the ruins. Pilgrims looking to offer worship generally do so at the Bhimeshwar Mahadev temple across the road. The museum grounds are entered on a ticket and are walked on open, uneven paths in the sun; confirm current entry arrangements and days of closing with the site before you travel.

Can we do darshan and offer puja at Bhima Devi Temple?
Not at the ancient complex itself. It is a protected archaeological site with an open-air sculpture museum, and the shrines are in ruins with no regular puja. Devotees usually offer worship at Bhimeshwar Mahadev, the small active Shiva temple just across the road, which also has the Draupadi Kund associated with it.
How far is it from Chandigarh, and can it be done as a day trip?
Pinjore is about 20-25 km from Chandigarh on the Kalka-Shimla highway, roughly 40 minutes by road, so it is comfortably a half-day trip. Most visitors combine the temple site with Yadavindra (Pinjore) Gardens next door, and many continue to Kalka or Morni Hills the same day.
Is it suitable for elderly parents?
Largely yes — the site is on flat ground with no climb and no long flight of steps, unlike most hill shrines. The walking is on open paths across about eight acres with limited shade, so go in the cooler months or the early part of the day and carry water. Wheelchair access over the older paved sections can be uneven, so it is worth asking at the entrance.
Why is it called the Khajuraho of North India?
Because the recovered panels include erotic sculpture of the same period and idiom as the Khajuraho temples, alongside images of Shiva, Vishnu, Ganesha and the goddess. Families should know this before visiting with children; the panels are displayed openly in the museum.
