About Radha Rani Temple

The Radha Rani Temple at Barsana, also called Shriji Mandir or Ladli Ji Mandir, stands on Bhanugarh hill in Mathura district and is one of the few temples in India where Radha, and not Krishna, is the presiding deity — she is worshipped here as Ladli Ji, the beloved daughter of the house. Tradition holds that Barsana was the home of Radha's father Vrishabhanu and therefore her birthplace, which is why Braj pilgrims treat this hilltop as the emotional centre of the Radha-Krishna circuit rather than a stop on it. The temple as it stands was rebuilt in 1675 by Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha, in Rajput style, and its most recognisable feature is the red-and-white sandstone construction — carved pillars, arches and domes with painted inner walls and ceilings — reached by a long stone stairway up the hill. It is visited alongside Nandgaon, Vrindavan and Mathura on a Braj yatra.

Best time to visit

October to March is the comfortable window, when Braj is cool and dry; the summer months of April to June are severe on the hill climb for elders. Radhashtami, Radha's birth anniversary in Bhadrapada (August–September), is the temple's biggest day and draws enormous crowds. Barsana's Lathmar Holi, held a few days before the main Holi in February–March, is famously crowded and physically rough — colour, sticks and dense pressing crowds — and is best avoided by families travelling with elders or small children.

How to reach

The nearest airport is Agra (roughly 105 km); Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, about 160 km away, has far better connections and is the more practical arrival point. Mathura Junction is the main railhead, about 50 km by road, with a smaller station at Kosi Kalan around 20 km away. By road, Barsana is a 3.5 to 4 hour drive from Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway, and roughly an hour and a half from Mathura or Vrindavan by taxi.

The temple sits on top of Bhanugarh hill and is reached by a stone stairway of over 200 steps. There is no lift; elderly pilgrims and anyone with knee or heart trouble should plan for a slow climb with rest stops, or ask locally about the assisted options available on the day. Dress modestly as at any Braj temple, and confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel, as they change between summer and winter and around festivals.

What we arrange
  • Stays near the shrine — so elders aren't driven back and forth at 4am.
  • Private transfers — pick-up from your door, not a meeting point.
  • Meals that suit the group — including pure-veg and fasting requirements.
  • Group travel — 4 people or 40, one coordinator, one itinerary.
  • Someone on the phone — when you're in a queue three states from home.
What we don't do: sell you darshan.

Temple boards run their own darshan queues and quotas. No travel agent can sell you a special one, and agencies that promise "VIP darshan" are either misleading you or breaking the trust's rules. We help you book the official slots and we get everything else right.

Travelling with elders?

Most of the people we send on yatra are over 55, or booking for parents who are. We plan shorter driving days, stays within walking distance where the shrine allows it, and we'll tell you honestly if a site involves a long climb or a trek before you pay — not after.

Radha Rani Temple — common questions
Why is Radha the main deity here instead of Krishna?

Barsana is traditionally held to be Radha's birthplace, the home of her father Vrishabhanu, so she is worshipped here as Ladli Ji, the beloved daughter of the town. This makes it one of the few major temples in India where Radha is the presiding deity; Krishna is worshipped alongside her as Lal Ji.

How many steps are there, and can elderly parents manage the climb?

The main temple is reached by a stone stairway of over 200 steps up Bhanugarh hill. Many older pilgrims do complete it, but slowly and with breaks. Go early in the morning or in the cooler months, carry water, and if mobility is a real concern, ask locally on the day about assisted options up the hill.

Should we visit during Lathmar Holi?

Only if you specifically want the festival experience and are travelling without elders or small children. Lathmar Holi in Barsana falls a few days before the main Holi and brings very heavy crowds along with the colour and sticks. For a calm darshan, come between October and March on an ordinary weekday morning.

What else can we cover on the same trip?

Barsana pairs naturally with Nandgaon, about 8 to 10 km away and associated with Krishna's childhood home, and with Vrindavan and Mathura, both within an hour and a half by road. Most Braj itineraries cover all four over two or three days.
