The Annapurna Devi Mandir stands in Vishwanath Gali, a few steps north-west of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, and is dedicated to Annapurna — Parvati in her form as the goddess who feeds, holding a ladle and a vessel of rice. The present temple was built in 1729 by the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I in the Nagara style, with a sanctum fronted by a pillared porch. It holds two images of the goddess: a brass one worshipped through the year, and a golden Annapurna, seated with Bhudevi and Sridevi, brought out for darshan only during the Diwali period. Tradition holds that Kashi is the city where no one goes hungry because Annapurna herself serves food here, and the temple has long run an annakshetra feeding pilgrims and the poor.
October to March is the comfortable season in Varanasi — the summer months are severely hot and the monsoon leaves the ghat lanes wet and slippery. The temple's biggest occasion is the Diwali window, when the golden idol is placed for darshan from Dhanteras until Annakut, the day after Diwali; expect very heavy, slow-moving crowds in the narrow lanes then, which can be hard on elders. Navratri is also busy. Dates shift each year, so confirm the golden-darshan days with the temple before you travel.
The nearest airport is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur, roughly 25 km from the temple. Varanasi Junction (Cantt) is about 5 km away, with Banaras (Manduadih) station another option. By road, vehicles come only as far as the Godowlia crossing area; from there it is a walk of a few hundred metres through Vishwanath Gali, and the temple sits just beside the Kashi Vishwanath complex.
The last stretch is on foot through the old lanes of Vishwanath Gali — narrow, crowded, uneven underfoot and not reachable by car; plan for this if you are travelling with elders or anyone who cannot walk or stand long. The golden idol is shown only during the Diwali-to-Annakut days, not through the year. Security around the Kashi Vishwanath precinct is tight and restrictions on phones, cameras and bags are enforced; check the current rules on the day rather than assuming.

When can I see the golden idol of Maa Annapurna?
Only during the Diwali period — the golden image is placed for darshan from Dhanteras until Annakut, the day after Diwali, a window of a few days each year. The brass image is worshipped daily through the rest of the year. Since the dates move with the Hindu calendar, confirm with the temple before booking.
Is the Annapurna temple part of the Kashi Vishwanath complex?
It is a separate temple with its own trust, but it stands very close by in Vishwanath Gali, just north-west of Kashi Vishwanath. Most pilgrims visit both on the same walk.
Can elderly parents manage this temple?
The temple itself is at ground level, but the approach is the difficulty — a walk through crowded, narrow old-city lanes where no vehicle can go. Go early in the day, avoid the Diwali and Navratri peak if mobility is a concern, and allow extra time. No one can arrange a faster queue; the temple runs its own darshan line.
