Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple stands in Mahadeva village, Ram Nagar tehsil of Barabanki district, on the banks of the Ghaghra river, and enshrines Shiva as a swayambhu-style Shivling set deep in the earth rather than mounted on a raised platform. Tradition holds that a Brahmin farmer named Lodheram Awasthi found the lingam while trying to plug a pit through which his irrigation water kept draining away, and could never reach its lower end; the shrine takes its name from his — "Lodhe" joined to "Ishwar". The temple is counted among a set of fifty-two Shivlings associated with the Shakti Peetha tradition, and is the kuldevta of the Lodhi community, which brings families here across generations. Local lore also ties the site to the Mahabharata, and an old well on the grounds is still called Pandav-Kup.
October to March is the comfortable window — Barabanki summers cross 42°C and the Ghaghra belt floods in the monsoon. The temple's biggest occasion is the Mahashivratri fair in Phalgun (February–March), when devotees arrive in lakhs, many walking in with kanwars of water from distant districts; it is genuinely, punishingly crowded, and elders travelling then should expect long waits on foot in the open. A quieter cattle-and-village fair is held around November–December. For an unhurried darshan, pick an ordinary weekday in winter.
Nearest airport is Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, Lucknow, roughly 75–80 km away by road. The closest railhead is Burhwal Junction, about 30–35 km from the temple; Barabanki Junction is the larger station on the same line and has more trains, with taxis and autos available from both. By road the temple sits on the Fatehpur–Suratganj–Ramnagar road off NH-28C, about 5 km from Ram Nagar town, which is served by UP State Roadways buses; the last stretch is village road, so a hired car is easier for a family group.
Two things worth knowing before you book. First, the sanctum lingam sits below floor level and jalabhishek is done by pouring water down into it — expect the immediate area around the shrine to be wet and slippery, which matters if elders are walking barefoot. Second, the Barabanki district administration's own page describes the Mahashivratri fair here as an all-male gathering by long local custom; if women in your group intend to visit on that day, check with the temple committee first. Facilities in the village are basic; stay at Barabanki town or Lucknow. Please confirm timings and any festival-day arrangements directly with the temple before you travel.

Is Lodheshwar Mahadev a Jyotirlinga?
No. It is not one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is counted in a separate traditional set of fifty-two Shivlings linked to the Shakti Peetha tradition, and it is the family deity of the Lodhi community — which is why it draws very large crowds despite not being a Jyotirlinga.
Can we do this as a day trip from Lucknow?
Yes. It is roughly 75–80 km from Lucknow by road, comfortably a half-day to full-day round trip by car via Barabanki and Ram Nagar. On Mahashivratri, allow the whole day and much more — traffic is diverted and the last few kilometres are usually covered on foot.
Can a travel agent arrange a special or quick darshan?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The temple board runs its own queue and no operator can reserve, skip or speed up darshan. We can arrange your transport, stay and timing so you arrive on a lighter day — the line itself is the temple's to manage.
What is the best month to visit with elderly parents?
November to February. The weather is cool, the shrine is calm on ordinary weekdays, and you avoid both the summer heat and the Mahashivratri rush. Avoid the monsoon months — this is Ghaghra floodplain country and approach roads can be affected.
