Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, widely known as the ISKCON temple of Vrindavan, was inaugurated in April 1975 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and was the first temple built by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It stands in Raman Reti, the sandy stretch of Vrindavan that tradition holds was a playground of the young Krishna and his elder brother Balaram, and it is unusual among Vaishnava temples in placing the two brothers together on the central altar rather than Krishna with Radha. Two side altars complete the worship: Radha Shyamsundar with the gopis Lalita and Vishakha, and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with Nityananda. The white marble complex also holds Prabhupada's samadhi mandir near the entrance, along with a gurukula, a goshala and a guest house, and kirtan continues through the day in the main hall.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Vrindavan sits roughly between 8 and 28 degrees and long temple walks are easy for elders; the Kartik month, falling in October or November, is the most devotionally charged time to be in Braj. Janmashtami in August or September and Holi in February or March are the two great festivals here, and both fill the town far beyond its normal capacity, with heavy foot traffic on every approach road. Families travelling with older parents or small children usually do better on ordinary weekdays in late November, December or January.
Vrindavan's own small railway station is about 2 km from the temple, but the practical railhead is Mathura Junction, roughly 12 to 14 km away and well connected to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and the south. The nearest airport is Agra, about 70 km away with limited flights; most visitors fly into Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, around 150 km by the Yamuna Expressway, which is a comfortable three to four hour drive. Within Vrindavan, autos, e-rickshaws and taxis run to the temple gate from the bus stand and both stations, though the older lanes near other temples get congested and it is often quicker to walk the last stretch.
Modest dress is expected — cover shoulders and knees, and avoid shorts, sleeveless tops or torn clothing. Footwear is left outside. The temple keeps a midday break in its darshan schedule, so confirm current timings with the temple before you travel rather than arriving in the early afternoon. There is no restriction on entry by faith, and the complex is largely level ground with no climb.

Is the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan the same as Banke Bihari or Prem Mandir?
No, these are three separate temples in the same town. Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir is the ISKCON temple at Raman Reti, opened in 1975. Banke Bihari is a much older shrine in the old lanes, and Prem Mandir is a modern temple built by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. Most pilgrims visit all three across a day or two, since they are only a few kilometres apart.
Can foreigners or non-Hindus enter the temple?
Yes. There is no restriction on entry by faith or nationality at this temple, and ISKCON has an international congregation. Visitors are only asked to dress modestly, remove footwear and behave quietly in the temple hall.
How much time should we keep for the ISKCON temple, and can we stay there?
Most families spend an hour to ninety minutes on the three altars, the samadhi mandir and the kirtan hall, longer if they take prasadam. The complex runs its own guest house and a restaurant; rooms should be enquired about and booked with the temple's guest house directly, well in advance for Kartik, Janmashtami and Holi.
Is it manageable for elderly parents?
Generally yes. The complex is on flat ground with no long climb or steps of any consequence, and the marble floors are shaded. The main difficulty is festival crowding rather than terrain, so plan a non-festival weekday if mobility is a concern, and carry water in the summer months.
