Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib stands at about 4,572 metres (roughly 15,000 feet) in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, beside a glacial lake ringed by seven snow peaks, each carrying a Nishan Sahib on its cliff. It is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru; the Dasam Granth describes him meditating at a place of this description in a previous birth, and the site was identified and developed in the twentieth century on that basis. The star-shaped gurudwara on the lake shore is one of the highest Sikh shrines in the world, and pilgrims traditionally bathe in the icy lake before entering. Around 150,000 people are estimated to make the journey in a season.
The shrine is open only through the summer and monsoon window — roughly late May to early October — because snow and glaciers close the path from October to April. June and September usually give the steadiest weather and the clearest walking; July and August bring heavy Himalayan rain and landslide risk on the Govindghat road, though that is also when the neighbouring Valley of Flowers is in bloom. The opening (kapat) days and the closing day are announced each year by the Gurudwara management committee, so confirm the dates before booking.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, Dehradun, about 290 km from the road-head at Govindghat, and the nearest railhead is Rishikesh, roughly 270-300 km away by road. From Rishikesh the drive runs up the Badrinath highway through Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Joshimath to Govindghat, a full day of mountain driving. From Govindghat the last stretch is on foot: about 13 km to Ghangaria (the first 4 km now motorable by shared vehicle), then a steep stone-paved climb of about 6 km and 1,100 m of ascent to Hemkund. A short helicopter hop between Govindghat and Ghangaria is operated in season, but the final 6 km to the shrine must still be walked, ridden on a pony or carried by palki/porter.
This is a high-altitude trek, not a drive-up shrine. The last 6 km climb to 15,000 feet is steep and cold, and altitude sickness is a genuine risk for elders and anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions — a doctor's clearance beforehand is sensible. The shrine is shut roughly October to April. Pilgrim registration through the Uttarakhand government yatra portal is required, and heads must be covered inside the gurudwara. Ponies, porters and palkis are available at Ghangaria for those who cannot walk.

Can elderly parents do the Hemkund Sahib yatra?
Many do, but honestly: the last 6 km is a steep climb to about 15,000 feet where the air is thin and the weather turns quickly. Ponies, porters and palki (dandi) carriers are available from Ghangaria, and a helicopter runs between Govindghat and Ghangaria in season, which removes the longer lower stretch. Even so, get a doctor's opinion first if there is any heart, lung or blood-pressure history, and plan a night at Ghangaria to acclimatise rather than pushing up the same day.
How many days does the yatra take from Rishikesh?
Plan four to six days. Roughly: a full day's drive from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Govindghat, a day to reach Ghangaria, a day up to Hemkund Sahib and back down to Ghangaria, then the return. Many families add a day for the Valley of Flowers, which starts from the same base at Ghangaria.
Is Hemkund Sahib open all year?
No. Snow closes the route from about October to April and the gurudwara opens only for the summer season, generally late May to early October. The exact opening and closing dates are fixed each year by the Gurudwara management committee, so confirm them before you book travel.
