The Chitai Golu Devta Temple stands in a pine forest about 8-10 km from Almora, on the road running towards Jageshwar and Pithoragarh in the Kumaon hills. Golu Devta is a regional Kumaoni deity, worshipped as an incarnation of Shiva in the fierce Gaur Bhairav form, and known above all as the god of justice; tradition traces him to a prince of Champawat who served as a commander under the Katyuri kings. What people come for is the practice of petitioning him directly - devotees write out their grievance, often on stamp paper, and tie it up at the shrine, and when the matter is settled they return to hang a bell in thanks. The result is the temple's one unmistakable feature: thousands upon thousands of brass and copper bells, large and small, covering the railings, the trees and every frame in the compound.
March to June and September to November are the comfortable windows, with mild days, clear hill air and dependable roads. July to early September brings heavy rain, landslides and road closures across Kumaon and is best avoided by elders. December to February is clear but genuinely cold in the mornings. A fair is held at the temple in honour of Golu Devta and the shrine is busy through Dussehra and the summer holiday weeks - if you want a quiet visit, come on a weekday morning outside the season.
Nearest airport is Pantnagar, roughly 120-130 km away, about 4 hours by road; Delhi is the practical long-haul airport for most travellers. Nearest railhead is Kathgodam, around 90-95 km, with overnight and day trains from Delhi, Lucknow and Dehradun. From either point it is a hill drive via Bhowali and Almora; the temple itself sits directly beside the Almora-Pithoragarh road, so taxis and shared jeeps drop you at the gate and no trek is involved.
This is a hill shrine at altitude on a winding mountain road, and the last stretch from Almora is narrow - travellers prone to motion sickness should plan the drive for the morning. In the monsoon, landslides on the Kathgodam-Almora route can add hours or close the road entirely. Bells and offerings are bought from stalls outside the temple; there is no fixed rate, so agree the price before you take one. Please confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel.

Why are there so many bells at Golu Devta Temple?
Devotees petition Golu Devta in writing when they feel they have been wronged, often on court stamp paper, and tie the letter at the shrine. When the matter is resolved they return and hang a bell as thanksgiving. Generations of these offerings have left the compound covered in bells of every size.
Is there a climb or trek to reach the temple?
No. The temple is on the Almora-Pithoragarh road and vehicles reach the entrance. There are only a short flight of steps and a level walk inside the compound, which most elderly visitors manage without difficulty.
Can we visit Chitai Golu Devta along with other temples near Almora?
Yes. The shrine sits on the road towards Jageshwar Dham, a well-known cluster of ancient stone temples, and is close to the Binsar side of Almora, so it fits easily into a one or two day Kumaon itinerary.
