Babulnath is one of Mumbai's oldest Shiva temples, standing on a small hillock above Girgaum Chowpatty at the northern end of Marine Drive. The deity is Shiva worshipped as Babulnath, the Lord of the Babul (acacia) tree, and the temple takes its name from that tree. Tradition holds that a Shiva shrine stood here in the time of the 12th-century ruler Bhimdev, that the lingam was lost and later rediscovered by cowherds on this pastureland, and that the shrine was revived in the 18th century; the present stone temple with its tall spire dates from the later 19th century. What makes it distinctive in a city of crowded streets is the setting — a quiet stepped hill shrine with the sea and Chowpatty below, drawing daily worshippers rather than a set-piece pilgrimage crowd.
November to February is the most comfortable stretch, with dry, cooler weather and an easy climb; Mumbai's June-to-September monsoon makes the steps slippery. Mahashivratri (February or March) is the temple's biggest day and the shrine stays busy through the night, and every Monday of the Shravan month (roughly July-August) draws very heavy queues that begin forming long before dawn — elders may find those days genuinely punishing.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is about 20-25 km north, roughly an hour by taxi in normal traffic. On the Western Railway line, Charni Road station is about 1.5 km away and Grant Road about 1.6 km, both a short taxi or auto-free taxi ride; Mumbai Central terminus is about 3 km and CSMT about 8 km. By road the temple sits on Babulnath Road off Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (Gowalia Tank) Road, a few minutes from Marine Drive and Girgaum Chowpatty. Parking on the lane is very limited, so a taxi or cab drop is easier than driving.
The shrine is on a hillock and is reached by a flight of roughly a hundred steps. A lift is reported to be in service for those who cannot climb, but it is not always running — if you are travelling with elders or anyone with knee trouble, confirm with the temple before you go. Modest dress is expected, footwear is left below, and the temple has banned plastic bags on the premises, so carry offerings in cloth or paper.

How many steps are there at Babulnath Temple, and is there a lift?
The main shrine sits on a hillock reached by about a hundred steps. A lift has been operating for devotees who cannot manage the climb, but availability varies — call the temple office to confirm on the day, especially if someone in your group needs it.
Is Babulnath one of the twelve Jyotirlingas?
No. Babulnath is an old and much-loved Shiva temple in south Mumbai, but it is not a Jyotirlinga. Maharashtra's Jyotirlingas are Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar, Grishneshwar and Aundha Nagnath (with Parli Vaijnath also claimed).
When is the temple most crowded?
Mahashivratri and the Mondays of Shravan are by far the busiest, with queues forming in the early hours and waits that can be hard on elderly pilgrims. Ordinary weekday mornings are far calmer. Darshan queues are run entirely by the temple; no agent or operator can arrange priority entry.
What else can we see nearby?
Girgaum Chowpatty and Marine Drive are within walking distance, and Mumbadevi Temple, Mahalakshmi Temple and Haji Ali Dargah are all short drives away, so a half-day south Mumbai circuit is easy to combine.
