Few landscapes in India match Pangong Tso for sheer drama. Hemmed by bare brown mountains, the lake seems to glow from within, turning through blues and greens as clouds pass overhead. Spending a night on the shore lets you experience the silence after the day-trippers leave and the extraordinary clarity of the night sky.
Reaching Pangong means crossing Chang La, at roughly 5,360 metres one of the highest passes any road climbs. The ascent is thrilling but the thin air means we keep stops brief at the top. From there the road drops towards Tangtse and the first glimpse of the lake.
Pangong is a full day's drive from Leh, so a rest day in town beforehand is essential. The route passes Karu, Chang La and Tangtse, with a permit check along the way. We handle the Inner Line Permit and provide an experienced driver used to mountain conditions.
May to September is the window when the road stays open and the camps operate. Even in summer the lakeside is bitterly cold after dark, so pack warm layers, a hat and gloves. Weather can change quickly at this altitude, and we plan flexible timings around it.
